“I said,” he murmured after nibbling on her lower lip once more. “That there was no point in changing the sheets right now because they’re just going to get dirty again. “

“I thought you were going home.”

He stilled. “Do you want me to leave?” The question was soft but she could feel him tense.

“No. I didn’t know what you had planned.”

“I had nothing planned other than being with you.”

She wrapped her arms around him, uncaring he was still damp. “In that case. I’m hungry.”

His smile melted her heart. She got he wasn’t a man who smiled much. And she was going to cherish the few she got from him.

I could totally see myself with a man like this forever.

They ordered pizza, not wanting to go anywhere and while they ate, she curled up against him on the couch. Some movie played but she didn’t care.

“What got you wanting to be on a submarine?”

She tensed. She couldn’t help it, she hated these types of questions.

Davin angled his head to look at her. “I’m just curious. Not a lot of people relish the idea of spending so much time under the ocean in a tube.”

“A judge.”

His brow furrowed. “Come again? Is one of your parents a judge?”

She snorted. “God no. I was listening to one speak in high school. He’d been on the bench for a few years and was there talking to us about the judicial system and all the shit that goes with it. Someone asked him if he’d always wanted to do what he was and he fell silent before telling us. No, he’d not wanted to. He’d been a submariner on a fast attack.”

Neha moved away from the comforting heat of Davin’s body and faced him, cross legged on the sofa. Her plate of pizza between them. He adjusted to see her better and without looking away from her, turned down the volume on the movie that still played.

“He’d left us his card to be able to contact his office and ask questions. I took him up on it. And we met for lunch one day.”

“You didn’t ask about being a judge.”

She shook her head. “No. I couldn’t get the look of pure and raw love he had when he spoke about the submarine out of my head. And it was there again while we ate. That’s what I wanted. I craved the knowing of loving something so much, your entire body would glow when you spoke of it, when you did it. I mean, don’t get me wrong, he enjoyed being a judge and was very good at it from all I saw. But to me, it wasn’t what he loved.”

Davin stretched out an arm along the back of the couch and grabbed some of her curls. She loved that he always wanted to touch them.

“So, again, out of everything you could do, why did you pick the submarine?”

“He got me the chance to go see one and that was it for me. That’s what I wanted to do, I wanted to be part of that life.”

“You had to know it wasn’t going to be easy.”

She relaxed into his touch. “I know. He told me once that for me to succeed where so many would want me to fail was going to take courage unlike any I’d known.”

“You love him, this judge. He’s not your father, who is he? Uncle? Family?”

“Judge Stabler was more of a father to me than my own currently is. We’re family purely because we both wear dolphins. I miss him every day and do my best to make sure he will always be proud of me.”

Bam! Bam! Bam!

She unfurled her legs and rose only to stop when he tugged on her wrist. “Expecting company?”

“No, but I’m guessing it’s Cindy, Sugar, or Renny. Then again, it could be all three of them. If I don’t answer it, they will just come in.”

He pulled her back to the couch, moving the plate at the last minute and kissed her. “Get rid of them.”

“Doubt it’s going to happen. I’ve been ignoring their calls all day.” Another brief kiss and she hurried to the door.

“About damn time,” Renny said the second the door opened. “I was about to use my key.”

Without a word, she stepped back and let her friend in. Renny was killing it with her dress.

“Jesus girl, where are you going? You’re going to give half the men and women a heart attack.”

The neon green club dress was a one shoulder mini. There were side cut outs along the bodice and some open back ones. Most of her back was exposed because of this. There were a few strips of material, three, that came along the chest area and two that rose up slightly from the miniscule amount that covered her ass. The hue paired beautifully with Renny’s skin tone.
