“You’re playing a dangerous game, Kayden.”
“That’s the difference between you and me,” I snarl. “I’m not into playing games. You, on the other hand seem to enjoy cornering the market on that shit. Still, just so it’s crystal clear and you understand, I’ll spell it out for you.”
“Do that,” he says, the same dark look on his face, a smile that isn’t quite there, just a ghost of it. It’s also not cocky now, not at all. It’s almost… evil.
I ignore the fear that skates down my back. I just need rid of Chains. He can go back to his whores. He’ll leave at the end of the week like Uncle Dancer said and I’ll cry him out of my system. And this time, I’ll make sure I never forget the million reasons why I don’t want to be with a man that lives the club life.
“What we had or played around with, however you want to explain it, is over. It’s done. I don’t have a place for you in my world. So, go back to your whores and your world. With any luck, you and I will never have to see each other again.”
“That’s not the way this is going to go, Baby Girl.”
“It is the way it’s going to go. You don’t have a choice.”
He shakes his head back and forth very slowly, his eyes trained on me, his face almost cold.
“Leave Chains, or I’ll make sure you leave.”
“How do you plan on doing that?” he asks, his lips spreading into a smile that shows amusement and that just pisses me off. I’ve had it. I’m not here for this asshole to make fun of me. It’s bad enough that I let him hurt me. I refuse to let him mock me.
I pick up the phone and dial the number that I know by heart. Chains doesn’t make a move to stop me. I don’t know why, but part of me was hoping he would. Maybe, because I know this is the one thing that will end any association I have with Chains. That’s what I want, it has to be. I can’t have someone who hurts me so carelessly. I don’t want a player in my life. I cared about Chains and it’s clear that those feelings aren’t returned—not even a little bit. That’s a hard pill to swallow, but I do it just the same.
“Kayden? You okay?”
“Uncle Dancer?” I respond and I can’t stop the hurt from coming through my voice. I can even hear my tears. I haven’t got to cry yet, not with spending time with Thomas. Now, knowing that I’m going to make it impossible to ever see Chains again, those emotions are trying to get the better of me. I don’t give into it, but it’s definitely hard to hold back the emotion.
“What’s wrong, Kayden?” Uncle Dancer asks, instantly worried.
“Chains is here.”
“Chains? The nomad?” Dancer asks.
“He’s trying to get in my apartment, Uncle Dancer. Can you send Thomas and some of the others to make sure he leaves?”
“Motherfucker! Keep your doors locked. Do not let that asshole inside your apartment. I’ll be right there,” he growls, hanging up. I click off the phone and look at Chains in triumph—even if it is hollow.
“That was a mistake, Kayden,” he says, somber, all signs of cockiness gone from his face.
“The way I figure it,” I tell him, each word feeling as if they are heavy weights. “You have about twenty minutes, thirty tops before my uncle and the rest of the club get here. You need to get on your bike and get the hell out of town, Chains. It’s over.”
“Right,” he says, pushing himself away from the wall.
I wait for him to leave. I’m not prepared for the way he stops right in front of me, pushing into my personal space.
“I—”
I break off, unable to say anything when his hand clamps around my wrist so tight that it’s physically painful.
“Looks like we’re going to do this the hard way, Kayden,” he says and before I know what he’s doing, and can do anything to stop him, he lifts my body up and throws me over his shoulder.
I scream out, feeling as if I’m falling. I scramble to try and get out of his hold and find my balance.
“What are you doing?”
“If I’m leaving town, Kayden. Then, so are you. I told you before and you should have listened.”
“Listened to what? Oh my God! You’re crazy. You need to let me go and get out of here. Don’t you realize what my family will do to you?”
“You vowed that you were mine, anytime and anywhere I wanted you. I’m not going away just because you got your ass all twisted up thinking I was fucking other women. I’m not even going away knowing you gave what was mine away to another man. But, you’ll damn well be punished for that and when I’m done with you—”
