I know that if you count the number of seconds between a flash of lightning and the sound of thunder, then divide by five, you’ll know how many miles away the lightning is.

Well, this freaking thunder and lightning is simultaneous, which means it’s right over my damn car. I’m driving in the middle of the storm.

“Stay calm,” I whisper to myself. “You’re good. You’re allllll good.”

Another booming crack and I let out another scream.

“I’ve never been better,” I whimper as my stomach flutters.

The forest seems so angry. The dark trees are thrashing around in the howling wind like they’re warning me to go back.

“Uh oh,” I groan as the road starts to incline. My car keeps sliding around as I push the gas. The heavy rain has turned the dirt road into thick mud. It’s intense.

I turn my audiobook back on.

Usually, Antoine Rickard can calm me down.

—sex, wealth, and every desire I’ve ever had rolled into one long hard package.

“Open those sexy lips,” Antoine growls. “I want to see how many inches this pretty little mouth can take.”

“Oh, Antoine,” I whisper, talking along to the book. “You’re so big, do you think it can fit?”

“We’re going to make it fit, baby. Dirty little slut mouths like yours were made for big throbbing cocks.”

I grip the steering wheel and continue along the empty mountain road. I keep my eyes in front of me and my mind on the audiobook. I’m distracting myself by trying to remember every word.

“’Oh yes!’ Antoine roars as his punishing climax comes erupting forward. ‘That’s my dirt little sl—‘ Ahh!!”

Electric blue lightning slams into the massive tree in front of me. It explodes in a beautiful horrifying flash of turquoise and flames.

With a crack as loud as a gunshot, the giant tree tumbles over. It’s going to land on the freaking road!

I slam on my brakes, skidding through the mud while Antoine climaxes in my ears.

“Shit!” I scream as the top of the tree smashes into my car and shatters my windshield. Cubes of glass rain down on my lap. Branches scratch and claw at my face. The tree is literally in my car.

“What the hell?” I mutter as my brain goes into shock. I’m not making sense of any of this.

Rain is pouring into my car. Wet leaves are covering my dashboard. Antoine is pulling off Eloise’s panties.

I’m sitting here in shock with my hands still gripping the steering wheel, hidden under the leaves and branches of the dying tree.

What do I do?

The pungent smell of gasoline hits my nose.

You move. Now!

I yank off my seatbelt, open the door, and rush out of the car.

It’s even scarier out here with the warm rain coming down and the whistling wind whipping through the trees.

But I back away, keeping my eye on the car while expecting an explosion any second. Maybe I read too many books or watch too many movies, because an explosion never comes. Just rain, rain, and more freaking rain.

My hair is drenched. My cute new dress I bought is soaked and plastered to my body. Even my underwear is wet.

I take a step back and my foot sinks into mud. My favorite shoes are ruined.

“What am I supposed to do now?” I mutter out loud.

Maybe someone will come along…

I look up and down the dark secluded road and immediately know that’s not going to happen.

No one but me is going to blindly follow their GPS into the dark mountains during the worst rainstorm in history.

I run back to the car, grab my phone, and then hurry away to avoid the explosion that I still feel is imminent.

I try to call the local police, but the reception keeps cutting out. It’s not connecting to anything.

“Oh, come on!” I shout when my phone shuts down. I forgot it’s not waterproof. “No, no, no. Please no!”

The screen goes black.

Another streak of lightning cracks over my head.

Oh god…

This is so bad. It’s starting to hit me how incredibly bad this situation is.

I’m lost in the mountains with no car, no phone, no rain jacket, and the long cold night is just about to start.

At least, the rain is warm. It’s like a hot bath, but I know it’s going to get cold in the mountains overnight. I can’t shelter in my car. I can’t walk in this mud. Oh man, I might freeze to death.

“What was that?” I gasp when I hear an animal snarling.

Goosebumps crawl along my skin as I scan the dark forest, trying to find the source.

“No… Please no…”

An angry roar rips through the darkness and I whip around, staring in the direction of the horrifying sound.

I’m praying it doesn’t come this way as the warm rain pours down.

“Oh god!” I gasp when a big brown mass of something appears between the trees. “What is that?”
