“I think I’m falling in love with you,” he admits quietly, just as my legs start to shake and my head goes fuzzy. “Posie. Fuck,” he pants, and I know he can feel it too. Not just the way we are but so much more.

And now he loves me.

I’m afraid of what falling for this man will do to me. I barely survived the last man who told me he loved me, and he didn’t have a hold of me as much as this man does.

I think I’m fucked.

And now I’m falling for a killer.

At least he’s hot, I guess.

Knowing that resistance is futile, I cup his jaw as I whisper, “I think I’m falling in love with you, too.”

CHAPTER 46

Dutton

Idress and quietly sneak out of her room early. As I brew a cup of coffee, I check my messages. I see Will sent Bobbi’s location, and I immediately shared it with the others. Will can find anyone, so thank fuck he’s on our side. His services don’t come cheap, though, but I would pay him whatever it took to find where that asshole is staying.

“You’re here again,” Bentley says sleepily as he enters the kitchen, rubbing his eyes.

“I am.”

“Can you make me breakfast?” he asks. I look around, not sure what he eats.

“Cereal?” I say, and he scrunches up his nose at me.

“Mom makes me avocado on toast. She says cereal is full of preeeservatiiiives.” He draws out the last word but says it as if he’s heard it a million times.

“How about McDonald’s?” I ask. His eyes go wide, and then he runs to the door. “Let me tell your mother first. Don’t open that door.” He nods and hops from foot to foot as he waits.

I enter Posie’s room to find her cuddled up in the blankets. Leaning down and kissing her cheek, I whisper, “I’m taking your son to get breakfast. Do you want coffee?” She nods and turns over to her other side. Bentley hasn’t moved from where I left him when I walk back out to the entryway. I ruffle his hair as I tell him what a good job he did at listening before we head out to get some food.

The only reason I’m okay with leaving Posie alone in the house is because Ford is sitting outside in his car. He and Hawke have been taking shifts watching over the place, and I’m grateful to Eli for extending the protection.

Today’s the day we’re going to lure Bobbi out of hiding.

Bentley tells me all about his school on the ride, and I never once thought I would enjoy listening to a kid tell me about his day.

Yet, here I am.

When we return, I see Posie standing on the front porch in a nightgown, wiping her eyes. After I unbuckle Bentley, he jumps out of the car and runs over to her to tell her what we got. She scoops him up and hugs him hard. When she looks at me, she smiles softly.

“I was asleep. I thought…”

“I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s okay. You told me, and it didn’t click. But it’s okay.” She turns and heads inside, and I can tell how worried she was by the death grip she has on her son. Following her into the kitchen, I place the food on the counter. “Wow, you got a lot.”

“I didn’t know what you wanted, and Bentley wanted almost everything on the menu.” I chuckle.

“You can put me down now,” Bentley tells her. When he’s back on his feet, he climbs onto a chair and opens the bags, pulling out the pancakes followed by hash browns.

My phone buzzes, and I look at it. Posie offers me a small smile. “We can’t stay here forever,” she says.

Last night, we discussed tracking Bobbi down. Now that we know his whereabouts, the plan is in full swing. Eli is currently waiting outside the pub where Bobbi and his two goons are staying.

“I have to go,” I tell them. Her gaze meets mine, and she looks at me with sad eyes. Which is so unlike her; this woman is strong. “I’ll be back,” I promise as she wraps her arms around my midsection.

“Thank you,” she says before she pulls away. “I’ll see you later.” She turns back to Bentley. I give him a little wave as I leave. I hope this time, when I come back, she hasn’t run.

CHAPTER 47

Posie

Ihate that Dutton is so thoughtful. That this man, who is a known killer, and possibly even worse, is kind to me. That he shows me how I should be treated. And he and his family have been kind to Bentley. I never thought of bringing a man into Bentley’s life. Yet Dutton has slid straight in without an invitation, and he did it so effortlessly.

He started as my boss, and now he sleeps in my bed.
