Hunter listened to them talking about what happened a couple of nights ago, and he remained silent. He was the reason Harlow needed a drive. Making that phone call had been a long time in coming. It was a call he had put off for several days, if not weeks. The truth was, he and Harlow should never have happened.
She’d been a temptation he should have denied himself. Now, she had lost the baby. A baby he had known was a risk in the first place. Not once had he used a condom. He had loved the feel of her tight warmth wrapped around him. Running a hand down his face, he listened.
“The security cameras are all a dud,” Big Dick said. “All we have is Harlow heading out of town, and then she never gets back.”
“And according to her, she was attacked here. The car sped up, and as she tried to press on the gas, she wasn’t fast enough. They budged her, multiple times. She didn’t count how many times, and trust me, there was a bit of sarcasm when I asked. Between the ice and the speed, when they clipped her just right, Harlow said she lost control and that’s when she started to swerve and the car flipped down the embankment,” Raven finished.
“How did Jonah find her?”
“The lights,” Big Dick said. “Harlow hadn’t turned out the lights and her engine had still been running. Jonah was taking it slow and he saw the glare against a tree. He figured the ice had been a problem, and when he saw the state of the car, he tried to call you, Smokey.”
“But I was in the main club with my woman. My cell and the office phone were not heard over the music.”
“Which is when Jude arrived,” Big Dick said. “To let me know what happened and that someone had purposefully swiped my sister off the road.”
“Does she have any enemies?” Smokey asked.
“No.”
“Someone from her past? What about the boyfriend?”
Hunter hated this.
“No, and no,” Big Dick said. “We all know who did this.”
“I need to make sure we’re not clutching at straws,” Smokey said.
“Are you afraid?”
Smokey threw his chair back. “What the fuck did you just say to me?”
“Has the Twisted finally fucking freaked you out? Are you too scared to deal with the fucked-up shit?”
This time, Hunter got involved and grabbed Big Dick, holding him back. It was a struggle. Raven, Kinky, and Brick were also there, and they held Big Dick back.
“I don’t know who the fuck you think you are,” Smokey said. “But I’m not afraid of anything. I want to make sure we have our bases covered. Twisted have no fucking reason to attack your sister. She works for Ava, that’s all. No fucking reason at all. I want to make sure we look in all the right places, because if we mess this up, she will still be at risk. I’m not going to have anyone attacking your sister while we’re looking elsewhere. Got it?”
Big Dick took a deep breath, but Hunter felt the fight leave him.
“You’re right. You can all let me go.”
They did and Big Dick nodded his head and looked at Smokey. “I’m sorry.”
“I get it. Someone attacked your sister. That’s a lot of shit to take in. We all get it. We need to know if she has any enemies.”
“None,” Big Dick said. “Unless they’re customer-related.”
“Ava has already told me that she’s no problem. A couple of people who are assholes, but that comes with the territory,” Smokey said. “No past boyfriends. No evil best friends.”
“Harlow never had best friends,” Big Dick said.
There was silence at his admission.
Hunter looked toward Big Dick, and he found that hard to believe. Harlow was so outgoing. So happy. So sweet.
“What?” Big Dick asked.
“You’re trying to tell us that Harlow has no friends?” Raven asked.
“Other than Ava, Abriana, Larissa, and sometimes you, no, she doesn’t. Harlow doesn’t mingle well.” Big Dick shrugged.
“You’ve got to be making that shit up,” Smokey said.
“No, I’m not. Why do you think she struggled to keep a job? People don’t like Harlow. She has never been able to make friends. Trust me when I say she accepts that. She gets it. It’s why she’s never disappointed when an invite doesn’t come, or the fact she spends a lot of time alone. Our parents have tried to help, but it never happened. Years ago, I can’t remember how old Harlow was, maybe eight or even ten, there was supposed to be a party. She could have been ten, because it was supposed to be a big deal, and double digits is a big deal. Mom sent out the invitations, got Harlow all excited. The house was fully decorated, and the time came. No one showed up. The hours ticked by, and Mom made the excuse that she must have forgotten the invites. I found Harlow in a fucking tree house, pretending not to cry.”
