“I only want to help,” he tried again. He licked his lips. “And not get kicked out.”

“Did she get to base?” Tavin crossed his arms, rocking back on his heels.

Like a puppeteer worked their strings all sets of shoulders rose and fell in a perfectly cold synchrony.

“Wherever she is or is not isn’t your concern.” Cindy tucked some blonde hair behind her ear as she spoke. “It doesn’t matter how hot you two are or how good you are in bed, we’re not telling you anything else.”

He and Tav shared a look while Sugar and Renny did the same before everyone looked at Cindy.

She didn’t even blush. “What? You know damn well Neha hit that and, hello, look at them. I’m guessing if one is good in bed the other is.”

Tavin cleared his throat. “Sexual prowesses aside, my brother is right. We only want to help her.”

“Why do you think someone just dropped her name?” Renny’s question was soft but the other two fell silent and watched them for an answer.

Davin waited as well. He didn’t know, hell he’d not even been there. Angling slightly toward Tavin he waited.

“I was there,” his brother said. “I was walking someone when they mentioned her.”

“And you know it is her specifically?” Doubt lined Sugar’s inquiry.

“Do you know a lot of Neha Kirk’s in the Navy who happen to be a lieutenant? Because I don’t.”

Someone knocked on the door and they all looked in that direction. “Expecting someone?” Davin asked.

They all shook their head and he immediately went to the door.

“Wait,” Cindy said. He paused and threw a glance over his shoulder. “Will things get worse for her if they know you are here? You are on the same base.”

Fuck.

He shared a look with Tavin, and they moved to the side, out of the view of the door not far enough away to intercede if there was trouble. It wasn’t Cindy who went to the door though. It was Renny.

She pushed her glasses up and padded across the spotless floor, her bare feet making the slightest sound as she moved. Without disengaging the chain lock he’d put back up when he entered, she drew the door open a crack.

“Yes?”

Even from where he waited, he could hear the click and whir of cameras, plus there was the light.

“We’re here to follow up on the story of Lieutenant Kirk’s drug involvement. Has she been selling to the men on the submarine? How is it to know that a woman who is so highly regarded is actually a pusher?”

He fisted his hands and stepped forward. This was fucking bullshit. Tav put a hand on his upper arm, fingers flexing, holding him in place.

Renny didn’t look the slightest bit perturbed.

“Lieutenant Kirk isn’t here and perhaps you should substantiate some of your claims before you go running around trying to ruin someone’s career.”

“What do you mean she isn’t here? Is she on the run?”

“Anything for a story with you people isn’t it? Because she’s not here means she’s running? Why can’t she be at work?”

“Who are you?” one asked as a hand shoved through the small space with a recorder.

He wouldn’t have believed it from her if he’d not been standing there watching. Renny immediately shoved against the door not just with her slender weight but a good deal of force behind it. Davin could hear the snap and the scream of agony as the recorder fell to the ground.

“You bitch! You broke my fucking wrist.”

Renny slid the recorder back further into the apartment. “You weren’t invited it. I was protecting myself. I will give you two seconds to pull your arm back otherwise the next time, I’ll slam it harder.”

True to her word she backed off slightly, the dangling arm vanished, and she shut the door the rest of the way.

Fuck.

Tavin’s expression told him he was on the same page. Renny turned toward them and ran her dark gaze over them both.

“You see what I will do to people I don’t know, remember that if you hurt my girl. I will do that to a much more vital part of your anatomy, without hesitation, and without fail. Cop or not. Officer in the Navy or not.”

She walked off, digging in her pocket and pulling out a sucker. Her entire face softened as she slipped it between her lips. Then she was gone.

“You can’t keep the recorder,” Tavin said.

“Disagree,” Sugar replied, walking over to pick it up. “I can and I will. It is in her place and possession is nine-tenths of the law. He didn’t want to lose it here, he shouldn’t have tried to force his way in.”

Sugar and Cindy shared a look.

“After all,” Cindy took up the conversation. “A small female is bound to be nervous when a larger man pushes, or attempts to shove into her place.” Cindy walked away as well, leaving him with Sugar.
