I think that’s why I haven’t been jumping on some of the opportunities I’ve had recently.

The hot yoga instructor, Roger, finally made a date with me this Friday, and Finn from Chicago found me on Facebook after Halloween, and we’re going on a date on Saturday. Evidently, he’s back in town on business, and he’s made it clear in his messages he’s not interested in doing anything datey.

I’ve gotten a few other guys’ numbers from the restaurant, but I keep stalling.

Cody’s right. I need to push through like I was planning, but now when I think about hooking up with a guy, I just see Lance’s face from the Halloween party—those judgmental eyes…like he thinks I’m a sexual deviant.

I never used to have a problem with fucking around. I’d hit it and move on to the next, but now I have this phantom of Lance hanging over me, making me feel like I’m doing something wrong for fucking around like every other guy in this town.

I’m pissed that I give so many shits about what he thinks of me.

It’s totally throwing me off. I need to destress, so I head back to the condo and start rifling through the cabinets for ingredients to make chocolate chip cookies.

Baking always relaxes me. I didn’t do it nearly enough through the last year of our relationship since I’d sworn off carbs in a desperate attempt to attract his interest again.

Cody’s not home yet.

He’s been a good roomie. Stays out of my way. Doesn’t give a shit about much. We’ve both been so busy with work that we haven’t gotten to see each other more than a couple of times between our shifts.

Although, occasionally when I’m walking past his room, he’ll make these loud over-dramatic moans like he’s in the middle of mind-blowing sex or the best jerk-off session ever, which always makes me laugh.

I retrieve an aluminum bowl from the cabinet by the oven when the door to the condo opens and Cody struts in. His tank is drenched with sweat. Must’ve been at the gym. He grips a Taco Bell bag as he waves and then heads over to the couch, falling onto it and sighing.

“Ugh.”

He rests the bag on his chest as he digs his hand inside.

I have eggs, flour, and chocolate chips on the counter. I set the bowl beside them as I search for the sugar, which I can’t find for the life of me. And now that I think about it, I might’ve run out of it when I made brownies last week.

“Do you have any sugar I can use?” I ask.

“I got some sugar for you.”

I chuckle. “How helpful.”

I wink at him as he takes a bite out of a burrito in his hand. The way he goes at it, it’s like he hasn’t eaten all day.

“You forgot to have lunch again today, didn’t you?”

It’s a bad habit I’ve noticed he has. He’s like me with work in that he gets so focused on what he’s doing that he forgets those silly important things like eating.

“Maybe,” he says with his mouth full of burrito.

I continue my quest for sugar but finally give up. “Looks like I’m gonna have to go to the store.”

“Let me clean up, and I’ll come with.”

“You don’t have to.”

“It’s all good. I need to grab some shit for sandwiches or something. I keep eating out because I don’t have anything in the pantry, so you know, it’d be a little cheaper for me if I had some reserves.”

“I heard eating out and stopped listening.”

He laughs. “I bet you did, you horny thing.”

He showers up and then we head to the store. Cody grabs the cart and pushes it through the aisles.

It’s kind of adorable the way he leans his weight on it. He’s like a kid whose mom just let him push it for the first time.

We grab a few necessities before he asks, “So where you at with Hot Yoga Instructor?”

“Don’t even get me started. We finally managed to plan a date for this weekend.”

“Oh, really. So you’re doing the date thing for sure? That sucks.”

“I tried to convince him we just needed to meet at the bar one night, but he insisted.”

“Be careful with that is all I’m saying.”

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t let him trap you into some kind of we gotta go on dates and shit bullcrap. You don’t need him dragging this out only for you to find out neither of you is interested.”

“Right?”

“Any other prospects?”

“I’m seeing Finn on Saturday, so even if Friday doesn’t work out—”

“Finn? That horny kid from Halloween?”

“Yes.”

“I thought he was from Chicago.”

“He’s coming back this weekend for work.”

“Oh, no wonder he was so quick to friend us on Facebook.”

“Yeah. Don’t worry. I mentioned that I’m not interested in a three-way.”

“Way to throw your new buddy under the bus,” Cody says with a smirk. “But just let me know if you tap out on that because I’d be interested as fuck.”
