It wasn’t long before they were told to take their places. The bride and her entourage had arrived. The small gathering felt suddenly so big, his nerves soared within him. Porsche’s pastor had agreed to officiate their wedding, a wonderful woman by the name of Pastor Patricia who had been warm and welcoming, and stated that she’d known his soon-to-be wife for years. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his mother-in-law take her seat while dabbing at her eyes. The pianist finished her last song, and then the DJ took over. Stephen Sanchez’s, ‘Until I Found You,’ started to play.

The guests stood to their feet as the flower girl walked down the aisle. A small child from Porsche’s side of the family, she wore a baby blue dress, white tights, and thick dark brown pigtails. The crowd waved and smiled at her as she shyly approached, tossing white and blue flower petals along the grass. Next came the groomsmen, and the bridesmaids and matron of honor. They all had on the same flowing dark blue dresses, but each had a different shade of blue scarf wrapped around their necks. Some sashayed in, holding the arm of a groomsman, while others did a little skip or a march.

Once everyone had entered and walked to the edge of the pier, the guests followed, standing lined up on each side. Pastor Patricia walked to the very edge of it, beneath an arch decorated with white flowers, the lighthouse and sea at her back. Holding a white and black Bible with a red satin bookmarker, she began to read the scriptures.

Nikolai dropped his gaze and listened to the words, imagining his mother reciting them. Taking a deep breath, he slowly released it, wishing she could have been there to witness this day, to share this important moment in his life. He opened his eyes and tipped his head to the sun.

Zack Tabudlo’s, ‘Give Me Your Forever’ began to play. He turned around, away from the sea, and just then the goddess of his heart appeared from behind the lighthouse keeper’s home, a historic white house on the same property. She walked towards him as he stood on the pier with all of their family and friends.

He clasped his hands together, while his heart beat like a hammer he was forging. Cool air whipped against his face, hitting his eyes and making his tears retreat. He took a slight step back, sizing her up.

With her arm wrapped around her Uncle Anthony’s, she walked on, dressed in a pale, satiny blue wedding gown. So simple, flowy and elegant. Spaghetti straps accentuated some of his favorite parts of her—her shoulders and pronounced collar bones. She wore a diamond pendant necklace on an invisible thread which emphasized her graceful neck, and her hair was pulled away from her face in an ornate updo, crowned by a matching satin and lace trimmed veil that flowed behind her. A few tendrils of black hair framed her face, loosely curled along the sides, drawing attention to her perfect cheekbones, bright eyes, and smile. Her full lips, dusted with a bit of gold and pink shimmer, curved around even teeth. Her beauty was exquisite and robust.

As she drew closer, he loved how she held her head high with pride, but her eyes glistened with moisture—revealing her truth.

A wave of warmth consumed him. Drops of humidity clung to his damp forehead. I’m melting like a damn candle…

She was now standing beside him, and the pastor asked who gave her away. Her Uncle Anthony did the honors. As they faced each other, he overindulged on her rich, lovely perfume, sniffing the air and enjoying her presence in more ways than one. Dior’s Sauvage… She knew it was one of his favorites on her—made him go even wilder for her in bed.

Pastor Patricia said a simple prayer, then let everyone know that they were special, and all welcome to witness this beautiful event. She prompted them to exchange vows.

Porsche took a sharp breath, then looked into his eyes. Her complexion deepened.

“Nikolai, you asked me out on a date when all I wanted was for you to be apprehended.” The crowd burst out into a fit of laughter. He fought a chuckle as she shook her head. “I swear that wasn’t supposed to be funny.” This caused even more laughter. She waited for things to die down before she continued. “I said yes to the date invitation in an effort to garner a meeting. Never in my wildest dreams did I believe that a request from a client, in one of the most disheartening and saddest of cases to cross my desk, would lead … to me discovering a true love like I’ve never known.”

Her voice broke, and she looked away for a moment.
