“For me or you?” If it was for her, I’d respect it. If it was for me, I wanted to know.

“For you,” she replied.

“Then tell me.”

“Your father and I…we’re separating. He…”

My body clenched up. I could see it in the tears in her eyes, in the way her body nearly folded in on itself. He’d cheated on her. The fucking bastard had cheated on her. It wasn’t the first time, but it had been years…since I was young.

I looked at Jude, over Linc’s shoulder, knowing now why he’d come. He was helping take care of my mom. That was the kind of guy he was. “Thank you.”

“You’re my family,” was his reply.

“You’ll stay with me,” I told Mom, fighting back my anger. I hated my father. I couldn’t fucking stand him. Not in that moment, which was hard for me. We had been close, sharing a love of motocross. It was because of him that I raced.

“I can help take care of you until you’re healed up…not that you’ll need me with a nurse for a boyfriend.” Mom smiled.

Fuck. It wasn’t so funny anymore. “Ma…I—”

“Rush, you be a good boy and get some rest,” Mom interrupted. “Are you going to stay with him, Lincoln?”

“Yeah. Of course. I just didn’t want to intrude. I can give Beau and the guys an update, let them know they can go home. Sawyer will probably leave his car for me since mine is back in Fever Falls.” Sawyer didn’t drive much, since he lived where he worked. Made for easy travel.

“That works for me,” I said. “Jude, are you staying for a while too?” It had been some time since we’d been able to spend time together.

Jude glanced at Linc, then back at me. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll bring Mama K to your place, but I’ll come back.”

Linc’s jaw tightened. Well, well, well. This was an interesting development. Jude was being a dick…and Linc was definitely jealous.

“I’ll go talk to Beau.”

I frowned at the mention of Beau, who was my friend, which made me a dick too. Looked like Linc wasn’t the only one with jealousy issues.

He sneaked out of the room.

“Oh, Rush. He’s adorable. Such a sweet thing and clearly crazy about you.” Mom took Linc’s place beside me.

If only she knew I was the one who was crazy about him, and that Linc had no interest in me except for some jealousy and my dick. Well, he had wanted my dick. He wasn’t even feeling that anymore. “Mom, it’s really not serious. I wouldn’t even call him a boyfriend, boyfriend. It’s just a thing. We’re friends, and we’ve gone on a couple of dates.” I wasn’t even sure why I was keeping the lie going. I guess because I didn’t want to embarrass Linc. “What matters right now is you. Are you okay?” It was a stupid fucking question. Of course she wasn’t okay.

“I’m fine. I’d tell you if I wasn’t. I’m just… I’m excited to spend some time here with you. I missed you.” She hugged me.

“I missed you too, Ma.”

And I hated my father all over again. I fucking hated him.

It was a whirlwind after that. Linc came back a few minutes later. He said Beau and the guys sent their support and were on their way back to Fever Falls. I said goodbye to my mom, and then Jude took her to my house, saying he’d be back.

“I need to tell you something,” Linc said when we were alone.

“That you lied and are now my fake boyfriend? I already figured that part out. But don’t worry, I kind of like it.”

He opened his mouth to reply, but my trainer showed up, followed by the surgeon.

The word surgery was thrown around. I threatened to walk out. You know, just a normal day. Linc calmed me down and said he would be there. He called my mom to let her know, and she and Jude were already on their way back. The next thing I knew, they were wheeling me away and he was watching me with this strange sort of sadness mixed with fear.

When I woke up in recovery, the world blurry and my body feeling like it was floating, I whispered, “Red,” and he touched my hand.

“I’m right here, Rush.”

And then my world went black again.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Lincoln

Linc calls me when I’m not in the hospital or he won’t be at work for a few days just to check in. Other than my dad, there’s never been anyone who cared for me like he does. ~ Trey

“I fucking hate this sling,” Rush grumbled from the passenger seat.

I sighed. I’d had no idea Rush would be such a baby. It was just a sling, not the end of the world. “Stop whining. It’s not that big a deal.” No…a big deal would be the card in my pocket from the journalist who wanted to write a story about the gay motocross racer and his boyfriend.
