Two months and a handful of years loving him through friendship.

A little happy flutter raced through me, but I made sure to dampen my smile to a normal level.

We were just dating, I reminded myself. But it sure felt like a hell of a lot more than that.

Setting down the platter of rolls, the table was complete. And the table was surrounded with so many people it was abundant how lucky we both were to have such an amazing family.

I took my seat next to Weston, trying my best not to look at him too much or my mother would absolutely find another way to badger me about it. Hendrix and Savannah sat on the other side of the table, Hendrix’s parents and Savannah’s father on the other side of them with Bonnie in the middle.

You’d never know Bonnie’s husband was missing even though in reality, he hadn’t died that long ago. It had been Weston’s senior year in college and while they had problems, I know he never got the closure he deserved on those issues. Still, there was so much love around the table, it made me so happy to know Bonnie was wealthy not only in the fortune her and Weston had inherited, but in love as well.

“Have you two set a date yet?” my mother asked after we’d made it to dessert, and I about choked on the strawberry tart. My eyes were wide as I jerked my head to her, forcing down the fruity bite with difficulty.

“Do you need some water, Brynn?” She looked at me like I’d grown another head, while Weston patted me on the back just in case I really was choking. “Anyway,” Mom said, blinking at me before looking across the table at Savannah.

“We’re still in the early stages of planning,” Savannah answered, and I felt like an absolute fool for thinking my mother was talking to me.

I mean, of course she wasn’t. Weston and I were dating. Secretly dating. We weren’t anywhere near the idea of marriage. Hell, he hadn’t even uttered the L word yet.

My heart pounded against my chest, and I focused on my tart while my mother continued to ask Savannah and Hendrix about their plans. I was having a hard time not telling Weston how I really felt. I think I fell for him a long time ago, and now that we were officially together and everything was vibing so well between us? It was hard stopping my heart from spiraling right out of control.

“How about you, Weston?” Bonnie asked just as I was coming back in from helping clear all the dessert plates. I’d rinsed and loaded all the dishes before returning to the dining room. Hendrix and Savannah, their parents, and my mom had already spread out, some heading to their rooms while the others went to the living room to couch surf.

Weston was leaned back in his chair, sipping on his after-dessert coffee looking a hell of a lot like a dream come to life. He was casual in a pair of slacks and a polo, his hair mussed, and the evidence of a five o’clock shadow dusting his chin. God, I loved vacation Weston.

I loved business meeting Weston too.

And Netflix and chill Weston, especially when he’d slip on his soft gray sweatpants.

I think I just about loved every version of him.

“Brynn is definitely the one,” he answered, the words freezing me in a very awkward position halfway to sitting back in my seat next to him.

He glanced at me with a confused look, eying the chair and my ass poised a few inches above it.

“That’s wonderful,” Bonnie said, and I settled onto the chair, adrenaline racing through my veins. “Brynn, you must be so proud.”

I blinked at Weston, and his grin was this side of shit-eating. I wanted to punch him for letting me flounder. What the hell were they talking about? Us?

“Heading up the marketing firm,” Weston said. “Truly, I couldn’t have found anyone better.”

I blew out a breath, unable to stop the laughter from leaving my lips. I was really losing it this week—too many secrets, too much bliss I couldn’t contain. It was a tough gig, but it was totally worth it.

“I’m very lucky,” I said, finally remembering how to speak. “Weston’s faith in me gave me the opportunity of my dreams. I wake up every day excited to go to work.”

Weston scoffed. “Were you not excited before?”

I laughed again, Bonnie joining in. “Of course, I was,” I said, flashing him a chiding look. “Who wouldn’t be excited to pick up your coffee and favorite bagels?” I teased.

Weston cocked a brow at me. “You do way more than that and you know it,” he grumbled. “You’re practically the key to running my empire.”

His words fluttered around in my chest, making my heart expand.
