Yet somehow, I felt it was more than that. “I think it’s beautiful.”

“You’re beautiful, Mr. Nipples,” he said, taking a gentle bite at my pec.

I snickered, but I still wasn’t going to let him get away with shifting the conversation. “Whatever you decide, Kyle, you know I’m here for you.”

“I’ve just been thinking a lot more about where my life’s heading, now that my friends are going off to college. And I don’t know… I’m kind of lost, I guess. But I don’t mind it.”

“It’s a big transition. I can see you’ve been giving it a lot of thought. How could you not? You can act all tough and like you’re too good for the world, but…I’ve never been worried about you, Kyle Forsythe. There’s something special ahead for you.”

It wasn’t something I doubted. My Kyle would find his way, and I would be proud to witness it all as it unfolded.

He released one of my wrists and ran his finger along the crease in the middle of my palm.

I could see the worry in his expression. There were a lot of unknowns ahead of us. There would be laughter, tears, anger, pain… Life would show us everything awful, but it would show us everything good as well. As long as I had him close to me, that was all that mattered.

“You’ve got time to figure it out,” I assured him, “just like we have time for Machu Picchu next summer.”

His grin perked back up. We hadn’t talked much about those plans since we’d had to cancel after Tex had his stroke. It had been too much to consider, but I’d known even when we’d made our camping plans that we’d get there eventually. And now it felt like it was time to look forward to that special journey I wanted to take with him.

“If you’re ready by then,” I added.

“We can play it by ear. We’re pretty good at that.” He snickered. “It’s so funny.”

“What?”

“That morning we met, I was thinking senior year at Wyachet was going to be so shitty. It was a hell of a year, all right. But definitely not a shitty one.” He ran the backs of his knuckles along the scruff on my face.

“No, not such a shitty year at all…”

THE END
