He can watch.

What the fuck? No. I fist my hands at my side to prevent myself from doing something part of me knows I’ll regret. The rest of me is pretty on board with anything that gets Juliette’s hands on my body and mouths on my skin. “What the fuck is happening?” I manage to grind out.

“Siren.” Bowen sounds just as strangled as I do, and I watch him stroke Juliette’s neck with his thumb. Almost as if he can’t help himself.

“Maybe we could…” Juliette writhes against the wall, her hips obviously seeking friction. “Just a little. “

Bowen jerks back from her as if she’s burned him. He gives me a scorching look. “This isn’t over.” And then he bolts from the room.

“Oh good. It’s just the two of us. I prefer it that way.” Juliette starts to work her dress over her head.

The last of my hesitation leaves the room with the Cŵn Annwn. How can I resist how good I already feel, when Juliette is stripped to the skin in front of me? I don’t need magic to want her like this.

There’s something we need to do…somewhere we need to go…

The magic washes it all away. There’s only the throbbing between my thighs and the weightiness of my tongue. I need to taste her, and I need to do it now. I scramble out of my clothes, rushing to meet her. We clash in a tangle of questing hands and wanton mouths.

It always feels good to touch Juliette, to taste her. But it’s on another level entirely right now. Every sensation is heightened. She drags a single finger down the curve of my breast, and I nearly orgasm on the spot. “More.”

“Now who’s begging?” She starts to go to her knees, but I’m having none of that. I refuse to allow any more distance between us than absolutely necessary. I tumble us back onto the bed and flip her beneath me. Or at least I try. Juliette uses the momentum to flip us back, with her ending up on top. She grins down at me, particularly proud of herself.

Then her mouth is on mine and time ceases to have meaning. There’s only her hands on my body and her skin sliding against mine. Magic drives us, escalating our pleasure and drowning out all else. My worries, my fears, even my plans are all washed away as we make each other come again and again and again.

JULIETTE

“Get up, Juliette. We have to go.”

I slowly open my eyes and blink a few times until the room comes into focus. It’s not the only thing that becomes clear. Holy crap, that really just happened. We just went from a fight for our lives into a fuckfest beyond my wildest dreams. Though it could’ve been so much worse if Bowen had stayed. I shudder. If that’s the power of sirens, I think I understand why the monarch doesn’t want them on this island.

“Juliette.” Maura’s already dressed, her sword belted around her waist. She looks like she wants to shake me and is barely restraining herself.

It takes so much more energy than it should to sit up and move to the edge of the bed. It’s even harder to focus. What had she said? We have to go. “Is the exit spell ready?”

“Yes. Seiko gave it to me just now, but we have bigger problems. Or maybe an opportunity, depending on how you look at it.” She tosses my dress to me and waits until I put it on to continue. “There’s something going on in the square, and the monarch’s people are blocking access to the docks.”

Fear slices through me, dissipating the last of the relaxation that came from stellar sex. The Cŵn Annwn knows where we are now. If we can’t reach the docks, how are we supposed to exit the island? I slide my hand into my pocket, and the fear gets worse. In the scuffle, I never did give the Cŵn Annwn back the piece of eight I stole.

“He’s never going to stop coming.”

“I’ve been running for half my life.” Maura grins, fierce and feral. “Give me an entire realm of seas that I know like the back of my hand, and he’ll never find us. We just have to get off this fucking island.”

It strikes me that this is a part of Maura I haven’t seen in a decade, the part that revels in the chase as much as the hunt. If I go with her, if I join her crew, this will be my life. Hunting and fleeing in turn.

A kernel of excitement takes root in my belly. “How are we going to do that?”

“Come now, Juliette. Have a little faith. There’s a reason your father hasn’t caught me yet. I like to plan for every eventuality. My crew knows what to do, but we have to move now.” She’s almost giddy as she speaks, and I am forcibly reminded of how she was when we were younger. Ruthless and cunning, yes, but also a thrill seeker like none other.
