“Someday I’m gonna meet the one, and you’re not gonna be able to stop me from rambling on about him. So you’ll get to make up for it.”
I smiled. “I can’t wait.”
“Although, with my track record, I might be rambling about it to your daughter.” She laughed.

I’d taken what Mia said earlier today to heart. So even though this was the eve of my doctor’s appointment, I vowed not to let that ruin the night Owen and I could have together. It was high time I gave him the response he deserved to his love proclamation the other night—an honest one. When he’d said the words, I’d freaked out. He deserved better.
I knocked on his door, praying he was home.
He opened, looking amazing as always with his dress shirt unbuttoned at the top and rolled up at the sleeves.
“Hey.” He smiled. “This is a nice surprise.”
“I freaked out after you told me you loved me,” I announced.
He chuckled. “I know you did.”
I shrugged. “I guess it was obvious.”
“Yeah. That’s not news, Devyn.” He stepped aside. “Come in.”
I paced. “Do you hate me?”
“Of course not.”
“Do you wish you could take back those words?”
“No, because I meant them.”
I stopped pacing. “I don’t want you to take them back.”
He placed his hands on my shoulders. “Breathe. I’m not going anywhere. Take your time.”
“Part of me is afraid to let these feelings in—not just yours, but my feelings for you. I keep using my mother as an excuse for my behavior, but...she really did fuck me up, Owen.”
“Seeing her in person, in action?” He shook his head slowly. “It brought home why you’re so guarded. I really dislike her, for the way she treats you and your siblings. And I especially dislike her for making you believe you’re somehow unlovable. I get why you are the way you are, Devyn. You don’t have to explain a damn thing to me.”
“I’m sorry I’ve been such an idiot.”
He pinched my cheek. “Hey, don’t talk that way about my girlfriend.”
A chill ran down my spine. “You introduced yourself to my mother as my boyfriend, but is that real? Am I your girlfriend?”
“Do you want to be?”
For once, I allowed myself to answer honestly, without overthinking. “More than anything.”
“It’s a little backwards that I told you I loved you before I officially asked you to be my girlfriend.”
“Or that I potentially got pregnant during our first night together?” I smiled.
“Or that we had sex before we truly met?” He laughed, wrapping his hand around my waist. “I guess we’ve been backwards this whole time, huh?” He brushed his finger along my neck. “How long can you stay tonight?”
“Vera’s babysitting. So…” I sighed. “The one good thing about her being back.”
“That’s all she’s good for.”
I gripped his shirt. “I’m staying as long as you want me to. I don’t want to think about the appointment tomorrow, if I can avoid it.”
“That’s been our problem all along—too much thinking and not enough everything else.”
“What do you have in mind?” I asked suggestively.
“You on top of my face,” he said. “Would you be interested in that?”
“I would,” I whispered.
Desire filled Owen’s eyes as he led me to his bedroom. After he undressed me, he lifted off his shirt. Goose bumps formed on my skin as he ran his hands up and down my body.
“You’re cold. I’ll warm you up. Lie down.”
My back hit the mattress as I bounced on it. Owen hovered over me and traced his finger along my skin, sliding it all the way down to my groin. He took a moment to look at me. I could feel myself getting wetter by the second, unable to predict what he was going to do.
Then he lowered his face between my legs, and his hot tongue caused me to flinch from the sudden pleasure. I bent my head back, allowing myself to enjoy every moment. I gripped the sheets as my restless legs moved to keep up with the intensity of his tongue, which was now circling my clit.
“I love to taste how wet you are,” he muttered over my skin, his stubble tickling.
As his tongue continued to lap at me, I could hear the sound of my own wetness.
Owen suddenly moved back. “That was just a warmup.” He repositioned himself on the bed before waving his finger at me. “Come over here.”
My nipples hardened as I crawled toward his rock-hard body.
“Don’t think about anything right now except riding my face.”
With my legs on each side of him, I lowered myself onto his eager mouth. Owen placed a hand on each of my ass cheeks, guiding my movements over him.
I didn’t know if it was the hormones or what, but I’d never been so damn aroused by a man going down on me before. My clit throbbed over his mouth as the low sounds of his pleasure vibrated through my core.
