The thought of putting myself out there locked my throat tight. My gut sank. My chest felt heavy. When he didn’t say anything else, I forced myself to nod, trying to ignore the taste of bile in my throat. “Yeah, it’ll be nice.”

But really, it hurt already. I couldn’t imagine how it would feel when we walked away.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Elliott

We showered together, packed a small bag, jumped into Parker’s car, and then were on our way to Big Bear. I couldn’t believe he’d done this—that he’d taken the day off and planned a trip for us. This fucking man tied me in knots in ways no one else ever had, and he didn’t even know it.

I wondered what the plan was for The Vers. They recorded on Sundays, so either they rescheduled, or Parker was missing an episode. Well, I guessed they could record after we got home from our trip tomorrow, but he usually went there before noon.

“Let’s play road-trip games,” I said when we were on the road.

“No.”

“Yes,” I countered.

“Sometimes you’re like a big child.”

“Don’t pretend you don’t love it. I’m endearing. You also know I won’t stop until I get my way. So you might as well give in now.”

“You’re gonna harass me to play road-trip games with you for a year?”

I was aware that it didn’t really make sense, especially considering we would be divorced by then. I nodded. “Yep, absolutely.”

He gave a playful, dramatic sigh. But still, he played with me. It was only a two-hour drive to Big Bear, but we hit traffic, which made it closer to three. We laughed the whole time, singing songs and searching for certain color cars and trying to get semis to honk at us, the way I used to do as a child.

By the time we pulled up at the small cabin, it was already my favorite day ever.

“It’s cute,” I said when he parked. There were other houses, but they were off in the distance. The cabin was tucked in an area with trees as far as the eye could see, and a porch ran the length of it, with a swing at the end.

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay in a hotel?” Parker asked, making me laugh.

“I’m very, very sure. But if you’d like, we don’t have to leave the cabin at all. I’m telling you, though, I’ll expect you to be naked.”

“Will you now? Aren’t you bossy.”

“You fucking love it. You’d walk around naked all day, flaunting that perfect ass just like you do at home with your jocks. You revel in driving me wild.” And I adored that he liked it, so it totally worked.

“Ugh. What the fuck, I’m hard,” he said, making me laugh. “How the fuck do you do that shit just by talking to me!”

“Because I’m good, cariño. Now let’s go.” We got out of the car, I plucked our bag from the back seat, then followed a grumbling Parker to the door. Summer was on the horizon, so the temperature in Big Bear this time of year was high sixties to low seventies, which was basically perfect. He used a code to get into a lockbox, then let us inside.

It really was small, the cabin a studio with the living room, kitchen, and bedroom all in a large space. There was a fireplace surrounded by brick, but everything else was made from wood, all dark earth tones.

I dropped the bag and wrapped my arms around him from behind. “Mmm. I can’t wait to fuck you here…or you can have my ass. I’m not picky. I just want to come with you.”

“You always want to come with me.” Still, as he spoke, he was pushing his ass against my groin.

“Can you blame me?”

“Nope.”

“And why is that?” I kissed his nape, let my lips press a trail across his skin. He sucked in a sharp breath. He knew what I wanted, and I wouldn’t give up until I got it. “Tell me, beautiful. Why is that?”

“Because my ass is your favorite,” he said breathlessly.

“And?”

“It’s perfect.”

“And…”

“So is my mouth…and you think I’m sexy and pretty, and no one turns you on the way I do.” He was still pushing against me, basically humping himself on my cock, if only the damned clothes weren’t in the way.

“Yes, exactly…good boy. You know how fucking perfect you are.”

He dropped his head back against my shoulder, arching his torso. I ran my hands up and down it, under his shirt, then down to cup his bulge. “Save this for me for later. We’re going to go have some fun.”

“What!” he complained when I pulled away, and I laughed. “You’re mean, Elliott. I don’t like you anymore.”

The truth was, I didn’t want Parker just to like me. I wanted him to love me.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Parker

When I said that Elliott was like a big kid sometimes, I hadn’t been exaggerating. The thing was, he’d also been right. It was one of my favorite things about him. He made even the smallest things more fun. He made me want to try activities I wouldn’t want to try without him, and he made me curious about the world in new and exciting ways.
