“He just got back,” I complained. “He’s not going to descend again. He’s been topside for less than twenty-four hours. You can tell Lucifer to fuck himself.”
“Oh, I think that would be a bad idea, my lady,” the demon said, going a bit pale. “He does not understand your comedy.”
“It’s not comedy. I want him to fuck himself with a sword or something,” I shot back.
“Kelsey, little ears.” Rose pointed to the ceiling.
I was scaring the children again, but I wasn’t about to back down. I would, however, lower my voice. “Gray, tell him to leave.”
My husband’s expression turned grim. “I can’t do that. I mean I could, but he won’t leave without me.”
“How is he even here? I was told the wards held against demons who aren’t in the system. Are you telling me you allowed him in? You opened us up to this?” I was shocked at the thought.
“I can find My Lord wherever he is,” the demon assured me. “What kind of a butler do you think I am, my lady?”
“We already have a butler.” I did not like this guy one bit.
The demon snorted. “You have a freak. An outcast satan is not a real butler. You should understand that I run a proper household and look forward to welcoming any…”
Gray held up a hand. “I’ll go. I’ll be there soon, Tix. Give me a moment to talk to my wife and I will follow.”
Gray turned to face me. “Kelsey, I have to go.”
“No, you don’t.” He’d just gotten here, and I needed him. Fenrir needed him. “You should stay here and reconnect with your son. Gray, that demon was going to say he’s ready to welcome any children we have. We’re having a son in less than nine months. Did you even protect him?”
His eyes flared and went the slightest red. “You think I wouldn’t protect our son? I made sure no one can touch you or Trent or Fenrir. I did it all to protect the three of you, and I took into account what happened on our wedding night. If things go wrong, I am the only one who will pay. As always.”
“The only one who pays? Are you fucking kidding me? You know you have a martyr complex, Gray. If you’re the only one who pays, it’s because you won’t allow anyone else to help you. You’re doing what you’ve always done throughout our relationship. You’re making decisions about my welfare without me.”
“Well, I couldn’t ask you because you were on another fucking plane of existence.”
“I will tell Lord Lucifer you will be along shortly.” Tix shook his head slightly as though shocked at what he was seeing.
He popped out of existence.
“You are not going anywhere.” I wasn’t about to let him go back to Hell. “I’m calling Hugo. Or I’ll have Eddie look into your contract.”
Our butler was a satan. He’d left behind his brethren, but he could still judge a contract. If anyone could find some wiggle room in a contract it was Eddie.
Gray took a long breath. “Baby, I know this is hard on you but there was no other way.”
“Did you even try?” He often didn’t. He saw the thing that would cost him the most and decide that was the only way. He was the Eeyore of the demonic world.
“I’m not having this argument with you right now. I have to go. I have to play this game for another six weeks, and then we’ll be through. I’ll talk to Jamie and Nate about moving to Frelsi,” Gray promised. “We’ll discuss this further when I get back.”
“I won’t be here when you get back.” I might or I might not. I might have gone back to Frelsi, and I would bet if Gray’s butler from Hell could pop in wherever he happened to be, he wasn’t going to be welcome in the royals’ home.
It was likely why he no longer had a relationship with our son. Why he was going to fuck it up again with this one.
It wasn’t fair or right, but I couldn’t help myself in that moment. I was pregnant and scared and unsure I would be able to find this weapon Lee and Dean would need to fulfill their destiny. For now, the fate of the plane was on my back, and I wanted Gray with me.
I needed him.
When I’d left before we’d been in such a good place. We’d been a family, and now it felt like we were on the edge again, like if I let go for a second we could fall apart.
All I knew how to do in these moments was to fight.
He stared at me as though he wasn’t sure what to say.
“Stay with me.” I did know.
“I love you, Kelsey mine.”
And he was gone.
Again.
“Trent and Fen are coming back.” Luna was on the ground again and putting on her pink and purple robe. She looked up at her mom. “Everything is busy today, Mama. It’s loud here.”
