Before I can mention sneaking away from our party, Wynter joins us. She shifts nervously from foot to foot. “Is everything OK with Derek? He’s acting grumpy today. Well, grumpier than normal.”
I reach out and squeeze her shoulder. We’ve gone out for dessert at Courage Cookies three times this week. We’re on our way to becoming best friends. We just click, like two pieces of a puzzle that fit. I love how kind and supportive Wynter is. I wish I could help her with Derek. I suspect she’s in love with him even if she hasn’t said as much. “Don’t take it personally. He received a letter in the mail before we left for the lodge. I think it really upset him.”
She nods and glances his way again. Her gaze is filled with longing. “Yeah, maybe it doesn’t have anything to do with me.”
We chat for a couple more minutes until Cam is pulling me aside to the middle of the gazebo on the property. It’s a beautiful spot and it’s amazing to think that soon I’ll be married.
I wish my mom were here. There are still so many questions I have for her. But I’ve finally made peace with her memory. I don’t think I’ll ever understand the decisions she made but I have to believe that as a mom, she thought she was making the right choices. At the end of the day, that’s what we’re all doing. Making choices and hoping they’re the right ones.
“I love this place,” I murmur as I snuggle deeper into his embrace. Sitting here with him as the sunsets is perfect.
“I love you, baby girl” he whispers, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead.
I smile so big it feels like my face will crack. This man is everything to me. Because of him, I have a beautiful family and a bright future. We have so much to look forward to together.
