“Well, it’s cheap and lasts a long time.”

I didn’t realize what I’d said until I’d already said it. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to sound like an ass.”

“It’s fine. I’ve seen how rich you are.” She moved to the next stall and bought a couple potatoes.

I trailed behind her slightly, tagging along as she did her shopping. “So…want to come over tonight?”

“Not tired of me yet?” She pocketed some more produce before she moved to the meat stand.

“I don’t think I could ever get tired of that pussy.”

She turned at my words, her eyes wide because I’d just said that in public.

I gave a shrug. “I don’t care.”

She bought her piece of meat and placed it in her sack along with everything else. Then she headed back to her family’s home down the cobblestone street. “Not tonight. Tomorrow.”

The disappointment hit me like a windstorm. “Why not tonight?”

“The lottery is tonight. Every time my dad doesn’t win, he takes it pretty hard. He’s usually up all night. Not a good time to sneak out.”

“Damn.”

“You can wait until tomorrow, right?” She shot me a playful look, a soft smile on those full lips, her hair partially covering her face.

“I can barely wait five minutes.”

She chuckled and looked ahead again.

I thought about my father’s suggestion, that I forge a relationship with Elizabeth, but that sounded so unappealing when I’d already met the most beautiful woman in the world. She was flirty and playful, but she also had the kind of attitude that got me going. And she could suck dick like no other. “So, it’s a date, then? I’ll come to your window tomorrow night? Couple hours after sunset?”

“Sneaking in to your room to fuck doesn’t constitute a date.”

So, I was going to get laid? Yes. “How about some dinner and wine?”

“I normally wouldn’t refuse a meal served at the castle, but I’ll have had dinner shortly before that.”

“We can have dinner after.”

“Yeah?”

“The maid can leave it right at the door.”

“You won’t get in trouble if your father finds out?”

“He couldn’t care less what I do with my dick. He has his whores. I have mine.”

She halted in her tracks and looked at me as if she was about to deck me good.

“That’s not how I meant it,” I said quickly. “Came out wrong.”

“It better have come out wrong.” She continued forward again.

“I just meant he stays out of my business, and I stay out of his.” I stayed at her side, hoping I hadn’t just ruined my chances of having her between my sheets tomorrow night.

When we were close to her house, she stopped, probably because she didn’t want to be seen with me. “Well, this is where I take my leave.”

“I’ll miss you.” My hand immediately went to her perky ass and tugged her into me.

“Are you sure about that? Or will you be with one of your whores?” Her hand pressed against my chest to keep me back, but her tone was as playful as her eyes.

“I’ll be thinking about you all night—alone.”

“Good.” She rose on her tiptoes and gave me a kiss on the mouth. “Because I’ll be thinking about you all night—alone.”

“Ooh, sweetheart.” My hand tightened on her ass, and I drew her into me. “You drive me fucking crazy.”

It was a lonely night—just me, myself, and I.

I had to get through the next day as well, waiting for the time to pass so I could get that sexy blonde in my bed tonight. Just the two of us, hot and sweaty, going at it in front of the fire while the guards listened to me fuck that wet pussy.

Morning turned into midday. Midday turned into afternoon.

But it took forever.

I sat in my father’s study going over field maps when Burke walked inside. “M’lord, the lottery winners have been notified. They expect to be transferred tonight.”

Father barely looked up from his paperwork. “Thank you, Burke.”

Burke and the other guards handled the lottery. I never interacted with the “winners” and didn’t lower them to the bottom of the cliffs either. Since I had no part in it, it was easy to forget about, but listening to Effie talk about how important it was to her family made me a little sick.

I wanted to tell her the truth, but since it gave her family hope, I thought it would do more harm than good. It was always good to look forward to something, to strive for something, because if you didn’t, you would lose all purpose.

And sometimes that could be a death sentence.

There were so many applicants every cycle that the chances of her family getting picked were nearly impossible, so I wasn’t concerned that would be their fate. But I did feel guilty that the lottery existed at all—and it was all a lie.

A fucking lie.

My sister never knew the truth. My father said she was too good, too selfless, and if she ever found out, she would do everything she could to expose the truth. It was better for her and everyone else to stay in the dark.
