Darcy turned to look at her mate’s mother. This had to be her worst nightmare. “I’m sorry.”
She returned her attention back to the order and forced herself to focus. It wasn’t hard. She helped to work on these orders every single day she was at work. They were not hard and they organized the building into sections, to make sure everything was nice and neat, and so easy to do. Callie thought of everything.
“Have you done something to your hair?” Callie asked.
“No.” She’d taken a long shower and tried not to think about what happened. Joe had run away from her. He left her home. Sex with her had been so much of a nightmare, he’d actually run.
This had to be a new one for the books of bad dating experiences. Most of the time, her dates ran out the door. She had never had them run from her after sex. Of course, she had never had sex. This was her first experience, and she knew a woman’s time wasn’t always so great, but it had to be better than the guy running off.
“You look a little … different,” Callie said.
Darcy stared at her boss and the alpha’s mate. The mother of her mate, and Callie didn’t have a clue.
Holy crap. She had deflowered the alpha’s son. Her life was over.
“Can I, ugh, can I ask you something?” Darcy asked. The moment she asked that stupid question, she wanted to take it back.
She was an idiot. There was no doubt about it in her mind. She was a fucking idiot. A moron.
The last person she should be asking for dating and sex advice was Callie, Joe’s mother.
“Sure. You can ask me anything.”
If she said it didn’t matter, what would Callie think?
“You don’t have to. It’s of a personal nature. Forget about it.”
She hoped that Callie would say sure and then it would all be forgotten and she wouldn’t have to think about asking Callie about sex.
Why did she have to wait until she found her mate to have sex? No one did that. Okay, some wolves might do that, but not all. Why did she have to do that?
It wasn’t like she had the first clue who her mate was. Then she thought about Kelly and there was no point in even being upset by what she had done.
“Sure, go ahead.”
Great.
She cringed. This is not what she wanted.
She had hoped Callie would make an excuse and leave. Of course, Callie had never been rude to her. She had considered them both to be good friends.
“You know … during sex…”
Callie smiled at her. “You’re seeing someone?”
“We’re not exactly sure what we are.” She hated lying to Callie but after this morning, it was kind of the truth. Joe had run off, and she didn’t know what that meant for the two of them.
“What happened during sex?” Callie asked.
“Well, it was quick. If both people are virgins, you know, haven’t done it before.”
“Honey, I know what a virgin is.”
“Right, of course.” She couldn’t believe this was happening to her.
“Was it quick?” Callie asked.
“Very quick.” She wasn’t about to tell Callie that Joe had managed less than five minutes and hadn’t even gotten to four thrusts. Not that she minded, she had loved being with him.
“You do know that for mates the first time is quick as well,” Callie said.
“It is?” Darcy asked.
“Uh-huh, yeah, it can be super quick. Think about it, our bodies are driven, and all that emotion and pleasure, and passion. It bursts out and before you know where you are, you’re like, together one second and then orgasm central the next. With mates, it takes a little more time to last.” Callie sighed. “I remember what it was like for William and I. One night we did it a grand total of fifteen times.”
“Oh, right.”
“Yeah, trust me, that was a lot, and wow, every time with your mate is amazing,” Callie said. “With someone who is not your mate, though, I’ve heard that … you know, it can last a long time.” She shrugged.
“You’ve never been with anyone else?” Darcy asked.
“Nope. I’ve stayed with my William. I love him so much and I didn’t want to be with anyone else.” She sighed. “I thought you were waiting for your mate.”
“I am,” Darcy said.
“So, does that mean you’ve found your mate?”
Darcy didn’t have a clue how she was going to answer that. Callie was the boss and the alpha’s wife, and Joe’s mother, and those terms kept repeating in her head. Thankfully, she didn’t have to respond as someone asked for Callie’s attention.
“We’ll talk later.”
Callie was gone in the next second and Darcy took a deep breath of relief. She didn’t know how long she and Joe would be able to keep this secret.
Chapter Six
“Something is on your mind, Joe, talk to me,” his father said, bringing him a glass of lemonade.
