“Yes, sir,” I answered before picking up my phone and doing exactly as he had instructed. I silenced the phone just as a flurry of DINGS filled the quiet room.

I opened a group chat that had everyone except Drake and Dana on it. Everyone was on this one, including a couple of the Untouchables, Preacher, and Cynthia.

I started laughing at the comments and GIFs. I’d known that Drake had finally taken Dana on a proper date. And the girls had given her a bit of an, um, upgrade. The pictures they sent were off the charts sexy.

“What is it,” he asked, idly placing little kisses and nibbles on my inner thighs.

“I told you the girls were giving Dana a makeover. It sounds like Drake was absolutely stupefied.”

“Wish I had seen that. Poor sucker.”

“Me too.”

“But not now. Because there is no place I would rather be.”

I sighed, gazing in adoration at the gorgeous man below me, his broad shoulders wedged between my legs.

“Now, wife, where were we?”

My husband gave me a wicked grin and lowered his head again. For the next hour he made love to me. First with his mouth and fingers, then with his gorgeous manhood. Slowly. Carefully. Thoroughly.

We ate a tiny snack and crawled into bed early. We made love again just before dawn. Morning sex was a personal favorite, now that the nausea had passed. And being pregnant made me extra sensitive.

Lucky me, I thought dreamily as my husband murmured huskily that he was starving for a leisurely breakfast before making a meal out of me for the third time since last night. He told me not to move a muscle when we were done. I drifted back to sleep for an extra couple of hours when he got up to start his day. By the time I woke up, I was well and truly rested for the first time in months.

I was a lucky woman, indeed.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Dana

“This is incredible, Drake,” I said, looking around in wonder. “You did this all for me?”

“Of course I did it for you. Who else? You’re my girl.”

He looked so earnest and eager that I had to believe him. I didn’t know how many girls had come before me. I didn’t want to know. If he was a serial monogamist who fell in love at the drop of a dime, then so be it. I just wanted to enjoy being with him in the moment, without worrying about protecting my heart or what the future might bring.

Life turned on a dime, as Auntie liked to say. You never knew what was coming, good or bad. Trying to prepare for things that might never happen was not a winning strategy for happiness.

“Are you hungry?” He asked as he led me to the table and pulled out a chair. He pushed the chair back in and took the seat opposite me. It hit me then. The candles. The tablecloth. The red wine he poured me. It was my favorite kind. He had asked in advance. I had to admit, I was more than impressed. I was pretty much ready to swoon into his big, strong arms.

“You look so beautiful,” he said, staring at me.

“Thank you,” I said, resisting the urge to tell him he had already said that. Janet had advised me to let him tie himself in knots. That if a man talked for long enough, he would reveal his true feelings and his true nature. I sipped my wine and watched him as he settled in his chair, dramatically laying his napkin over his lap to make me laugh.

Neither of us spoke for a moment, taking a sip of our drinks. We chatted about this and that until footsteps clanged up the metal staircase. He stood immediately to help Mae and the busboy bring the tray over to the table. She tried to shoo him away but he insisted, holding the tray while she put the plates on the table, then tucked the tray under her arm as she beamed at him, then at me.

“This makes me very happy,” she said to me, then put her palm over her cheek. “Ignore me. I’m a silly old woman.”

Drake pressed a kiss to her cheek.

“Never silly. Never old.”

My heart melted completely in that moment. I was already in love with him. I knew he was a good man. But I didn’t have a lot of experience with good men. In that instant, every last one of my doubts evaporated.

I relaxed in a way that I never had before. I knew that I would be safe with him, no matter what. I stopped worrying about us going to bed together. I stopped worrying about what I looked like right now, or later tonight, with my clothes off.

I started to just enjoy myself. And it was wonderful.
