Prologue

Kaye (Ten Years Ago)

Heat radiated through my body. Not from the heavy blanket but the carnal kind. A heat that crept along your skin and infused your bloodstream. The type of heat I’d

never once experienced with the man who slept peacefully beside me.

“Tell me, Kaye, who’s better at licking your pussy? My brother or me?”

I jolted and tugged the blankets over me, scooting backward until I hit the headboard behind me.

Piper Hughes.

Piper smirked, a liquid sheen covering her lips and chin. She placed the pad of her thumb between her lips, and her wicked tongue lashed forward. She devoured her digit, sucking it into her mouth as she gazed at me seductively.

“That was rude, Kaye,” she mocked in a hushed tone as her blue eyes locked with mine. “My meal was delectable before you yanked it away from me.”

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” I whispered, glancing at the man—my boyfriend and Piper’s twin brother—sleeping beside me.

Piper chuckled and crawled on top of me. “Relax, he’s pretty much dead. I’m sure he’d sleep through bombs detonating outside the window.”

Tucking the blanket around me, I covered myself to my chin. I focused on the stucco ceiling and the 1970s wooden fan spinning slowly in the center of the white ridged design.

Piper didn’t push me to speak, but her soft breaths and her brother’s monotonous snores made my head reel. I should’ve been livid. I should’ve jumped out of this bed and screamed so loud that I woke the entire neighborhood. Yet all I did was lay there frozen as Piper caged my body between her arms.

“You think that blanket is going to protect you, Kaye? I’m not the problem, sweetheart. This is.” Piper tapped my temple gently with her index finger and smiled. “Admit it, Kaye. When my brother has his head between your legs, you wish it was my tongue making you scream.”

My mouth went dry, and my throat tightened. I shut my eyes tight, hoping I could make this situation disappear. But that was a foolish dream because Piper’s smug smirk was the first thing I noticed when I opened my eyelids.

I wanted to yell at her and wake Larken, but I couldn’t find my voice to tell Piper she was sick and twisted. To point out that she’d assaulted me by touching me while I slept. That would be a half-truth because in the two years I’d been fucking Larken Hughes, he’d never made my stomach flutter and my heart race the way his twin sister did.

Piper jumped as Larken’s hand moved, and he grabbed my thigh. Piper and I turned to gaze at him. Was he still asleep? Or awake, having heard more than I ever wished him to?

I turned to Piper and mouthed, “Go.”

She didn’t fight me. She got up and crept to Larken’s bedroom door, turning the knob and seeing herself out. Once she was gone and the door was closed behind her, I turned to Larken.

“Larken,” I whispered, praying he wasn’t awake.

He shifted, and a fresh wave of snores rose from him.

Piper was telling the truth. My body didn’t crave Larken, even though I wished it did. Larken’s touch didn’t ignite a fire within me. At best, sex with Larken was a transaction, a tit-for-tat. A contract that ensured both parties received what they needed.

I inhaled as my heart beat frantically. Shutting my eyes, I fisted my hands until the sharp pain of my nails digging into my skin soothed the tsunami in my mind.

Wanting Piper wasn’t the problem—her being Larken’s sister was. In a fucked up way, I loved the man beside me. He’d given me refuge from the horrors of my life. My stomach churned, knowing I’d betrayed him when he’d provided salvation from the mess known as my life. It didn’t matter that I was asleep when Piper made her move. What mattered was that her actions didn’t repel me—the opposite. For the first time in my life, I felt truly alive, and the world around me transformed from bleak to full of possibilities.

From the moment I met Piper and Larken Hughes, it was Piper I wanted. But it was Larken who’d helped me out of my shitty situation. Sure, his reasons were transactional, but at least he gave me a safe haven in the middle of the night. Larken gave me a warm place to sleep and food in my belly. So, instead of following my desire, I became a slave to my misplaced sense of loyalty.

But when I kissed Larken’s full lips and looked into his crystal blue eyes, I pretended he was Piper.

CHAPTER 1

Kaye

Ilove my job. If you’d told me ten years ago that the little girl who grew up in a trailer park with shit parents and not a penny to her name would one day be managing the biggest rock band in the world, I would’ve laughed. But here I am with a smile on my face, leaning back on a conference room chair in a high-rise building in New York City, waiting for an important meeting with a record executive from one of the largest record companies in the world. Cain, the band's drummer, and Lars, the lead singer, are here with their girlfriend, Billie. We’re waiting on Iggy and Marley, but those two are always late.
