Her eyes widened. “Won’t he be mad?”
“Furious.” Hack grinned.
She had to giggle. “Do you really think it would work?”
“Of course. I can’t have my best girl walking around with bad luck. It’s not good for my poor heart. Or my hair.”
“Your hair?” she asked, confused.
“Yeah, you getting hurt or into trouble all the time is giving me gray hair.”
She rolled her eyes at him.
“Come on. It’s time to get your treat.” His phone rang before he could move, and glanced down at it, frowning. “Sorry. Let me take this. Hello? Yeah? That’s right. What? Really? How did he die? Fuck. You think it was someone that he stole from? No, we’re back in Billings. Yeah, thanks for letting me know. Yeah, I’ll let her know.”
He ended the call, scowling at his phone.
“What is it?”
“That was the police officer that took our statements when we were robbed in Sioux Falls.”
“Oh, have they found the guy? Or your wallet?”
“I guess you could say they’ve found the guy. He’s dead. Found in an alley not far from the restaurant.”
“Is that not a good thing? Your words sound like it’s a good thing, but the way you’re frowning makes me think it’s a bad thing. I mean . . . I know someone dying is never something good. But he robbed us. At gunpoint.”
“It’s not that he’s dead. It was just . . . he was shot in the head.”
“Wow. I guess someone he’d robbed caught up with him?” Now she felt a bit queasy.
He glanced over at her, his gaze moving to where she was holding her tummy.
“Shit. I shouldn’t have told you.”
“What? No. I’m fine. Although, I don’t really feel like donuts anymore. This isn’t the most epic donut shop in Billings, is it? Because if it is, then I’m gonna cry. And I’m not a pretty crier.”
“This isn’t the most epic donut store in Billings,” he told her gently. “And I’m sorry I told you everything I just did. The last thing I want is to add to your nightmares.”
“You haven’t. I promise.”
He gave her a skeptical look.
“I think it’s better he’s gone. At least he can’t rob anyone else. Even if it is a bit gruesome. They don’t know who did it?”
“No,” he said. “They’re looking into it.”
“So if this isn’t an epic donut shop, is it ice cream?” she asked, trying to change the subject. She wasn’t sure she could eat any ice cream right now, either.
Total tragedy.
“Not an ice cream shop.”
“No? Then what is it?”
How did anyone know what it was when there was no signage? Weird.
“It only opened about a month ago. It’s a special store.”
“Special how?” she asked.
“For big Little girls and boys.”
“That sort of thing exists in real life?” Whoa. Mind. Blown. She’d known about the online stores, she liked to look at them sometimes and dream.
“Apparently. Let’s go and take a look, okay?”
“Can you just walk in?” she asked.
“Actually, it’s membership only.”
“You have a membership?” She looked over at him. Was he planning on bringing other women here?
She felt a bit murderous at that thought.
“Yep. I bought one last night.”
“Last night?”
“While you were sleeping,” he said, already opening his door.
Had he bought the membership so he could bring her here?
“Make sure you stay there until I come and get you.”
She rolled her eyes at his bossiness, but waited for him to come around and lift her down.
Hack took her good hand in his and led her to the door, where he had to ring a doorbell and hold up his membership card on his phone to the camera before the door opened.
“Why so much security?” she asked as they stepped into a small foyer. It looked really classy, with marble floors and a dark wallpaper on the walls.
“Oh, that’s because we like our clients to have their privacy protected.”
Greer looked over as a small woman bounced up to them. She was wearing a gorgeous outfit of pale pink and blue. A blue and pink striped tutu with long blue socks underneath and a pink long-sleeved top with a bunny on the front. The bunny had a fluffy tail.
“That outfit is adorable.”
The small woman had her hair pulled back in a high ponytail. “Thanks! What did you do to your arm? It looks sore.”
“Oh, it’s fine. Hack is just being overprotective.”
“Daddies tend to be.” The woman nodded and then gestured them forward. “Follow me. And welcome to LittleLand.”
They stepped into a large store. There was an impressive domed skylight flooding the big room with light. It was colorful yet, at the same time, tasteful. The walls were painted with murals. There was a jungle scene directly in front of her. Dinosaur-shaped signs indicated which direction to take.
“LittleLand? It sounds like a theme park.”
The other woman clasped her hands together. “That would be amazing, wouldn’t it? I’m thinking about it, but I don’t know where I could put it. I need to find a bit of secluded land where I could build a theme park and a hotel for people to stay. Plans . . . for now, I’ll just be happy with my shop.” She smiled at them both. “Hi, I’m Bonnie, by the way.”
