Shit. She’d forgotten about the scratches.
“Greer. No. This is not acceptable,” he told her in a firm voice.
Panic filled her. Had she hurt herself on purpose? She didn’t do that anymore. She didn’t want to spiral into bad habits. Her breath came in sharp pants.
“I . . . I forgot about the scrapes.”
“You still don’t hurt yourself, understand?”
“I wasn’t really hurting myself.” She looked at the floor as shame filled her.
She didn’t mean to.
He gently lifted her chin so she had to look into his gorgeous face. Shit. She’d never had a doctor this hot before.
He studied her for a long moment, and she waited for a lecture. Shame was making it hard for her to breathe.
“This has got to be a lot,” he finally said. “I’m not sure how you’re coping as well as you are.”
“W-what?”
Coping well? Her?
“You’re so strong.”
“Me?” She gaped at him.
“Yes. You. You sound shocked.”
“Because I am. I’m not strong.” Everyone treated her like she was going to break at any moment.
“Of course you are. It’s easy to see.”
“Then you might need glasses because no one else thinks that.”
“Well, I was always smarter than everyone else.” He winked at her.
She shocked herself by giggling.
“Now, let’s get your boo-boos taken care of.” He cleaned the scrapes on her palms before bandaging them both. “How does that feel?”
“It might need a bit of magic.”
“Hmm. You know, you’re right. Luckily, I have my magic kisses all ready.” He placed a kiss on each hand then each knee. “How does that feel?”
“So much better.”
“Good. Haven’t lost it. I’m still hot stuff.”
She giggled.
“Move your fingers for me please.”
“Ouch. Crap.”
“Your wrist is bit swollen. We need to get you an ice pack and bandage it up. I’m sure that with three kids, Sav has got some ice packs in the freezer.” He moved to the kitchen and she wasn’t ashamed to admit that she admired his tight ass in those jeans.
Yum. Yum.
Definitely like no doctor she’d ever met before.

“Are you checking out my ass?” Hack called back without turning to look at her.
What the heck?
How did he know?
“Do you have eyes in the back of your head?” she asked.
He laughed. “I sure do, Ladybug. You just remember that.”
Oh, she would.
He returned with two soft ice packs. “Would you like one with dinosaurs or unicorns on it?”
“I’ll take the unicorns.”
“Good choice.” He walked over and wrapped it gently around her wrist, then placed a cushion on her lap and laid her arm on it.
“Keep that there, Ladybug. I need to look at your knees.”
“They’re fine.”
“Do you have a super-duper fancy stethoscope?” he asked sternly.
“Um, no.”
“Then we’ll leave it up to the guy that does.” He pointed at himself. “That’s me. I’ve even got one of those pieces of paper that lets me do this to other people.”
“Really? How did you get that?”
“Paid five bucks and got it out of a vending machine.”
She giggled.
“The easiest thing might be to roll your pants up. Is that all right?”
“Uh-huh.”
He carefully pushed them up over her knees. “I think we should get an x-ray on that wrist.”
“Nah, it’ll be all good.” An x-ray? Not happening.
He eyed her. “I can take you to my clinic if you’d rather not go to the hospital.”
“You have a clinic? Oh wait, I remember you telling me about it. It’s a not-for-profit, right?”
“Yeah. I go there at least one day a week. Most of our equipment is donated, including an x-ray machine we call Big Bertha.” He cleaned her knees. “So I’ll take you there to get an x-ray.”
“Tonight?”
“I was thinking in the morning.”
She bit her lip. “Maybe, I’ll see what my wrist is like. But I’ll pay for it. Okay?”
He eyed her for a long moment. “Sure. I’ll give you the friends and family discount.”
“Oh, what’s the discount?”
“It’s a hundred percent off.”
Her mouth dropped open. “Hack! You can’t do that! I’ve got to pay something at least.”
“Sure I can. Does Sav know you don’t have insurance, baby?” he asked.
She stiffened. “No. And I’d appreciate you keeping that to yourself. You have to, right? There’s some sort of doctor-patient confidentiality.”
“Hmm, not sure I want to be your doctor.”
“Oh. Sure. I understand.” Actually, she didn’t really. And it kind of hurt. She thought they were growing close.
“Because if I were your doctor, I would probably get sued for being inappropriate.”
“You haven’t been inappropriate.”
“Not yet.” He winked.
Her cheeks grew red. Then her stomach chose that moment to growl.
Oh crap.
She moved her good hand to her tummy. “Sorry.”
He raised his eyebrows. “You need to eat dinner.”
“Yeah, although I didn’t mean to buy that much. I don’t suppose you’re hungry? Would you like to stay for dinner?”
And maybe not leave.
Yeah, that would be a great way to scare the guy to death.
“I could eat,” he told her, standing up and stretching. A small sliver of muscular skin appeared in front of her eyes.
