I expected at least my father-in-law to give me shit, but the three of them started laughing their asses off. “I’ve wanted to do that for so long, thank you.” Her Dad slapped me on the shoulder.
“What the fuck happened to him? Why does he look like that?” I looked back at the house.
“We’re not sure. I heard the rumors, but as far as I can tell, once my daughter divorced him, he went downhill fast. Even lost his job, the last I heard. Shame, he was a good kid once.” He shook his head in disgust.
“Weak fuck!”
“So what happened? All Amanda said was for us to get here as quickly as we could because there was some kind of altercation, and she was afraid you were going to get into trouble.” Her older brother Mark asked.
“She hit her.”
“Who hit who?” I explained the situation to them. Now, I was the one holding them back. We said our goodbyes once I calmed them down and talked them into going home, but they all decided they wanted to come home with me.
She must’ve scared them into thinking I was going postal, or they were worried about what I was going to do to her once I got home. Knowing her, she’d told them everything, including the fact that she’d fucked up.
AMANDA
“How bad do you think it is? I didn’t mess up too badly, did I, Angel?”
“I think you need to go into witness protection.”
“Could you be serious for one second?” I was scared out of my mind. Not that he would do anything to me, but I’ve never heard Thunder so upset, especially not with me.
He'd sounded so cold and detached on the phone. “I didn’t think it was that big of a deal for me to go to the doctor alone. How was I to know that I’d run into them?”
“Isn’t that the reason you never wanted to go alone in the first place?”
“Yes, but it was just a precaution. Besides, we never ran into them before.” At least I knew that he wasn’t in jail because Dad had called not too long ago and told me everything was fine. I was so relieved. If anything happened to him because of me, I would never forgive myself.
I’d called Angel to come over to offer support, but as usual, she was on his side. I heard his car pull up outside, and my insides twisted around themselves. I got up and went to the door where he met me.
He didn’t say anything for the longest time, just looked at me before pulling me into his arms and kissing my forehead. The relief was so strong my knees almost gave out. “Oh, hi, Dad, hi guys.” I hadn’t seen them standing there until he let me go.
I kept waiting for the explosion, all through the impromptu family dinner, where all we discussed was the fact that grandma was moving in with us in the little carriage house on the property with her own help included and would be handling things at the bakery until after my maternity leave.
I couldn’t even argue the fact that none of this had been run by me because I was in enough trouble as it was. Whenever we got around to the day’s happenings, everyone gave me crap for not being careful, as if it was my fault that my ex and his mother had lost their minds.
All throughout dinner and after, Thunder had been his usual self. There was no sign of the anger I’d heard on the phone, and he seemed relaxed and at ease. I still didn’t know what had happened with Dan after he went to his house and figured I’d wait until we were alone to ask.
It was only when my family left, and Joy went to bed when he took my hand without a word and led me to the bedroom that I realized he’d been pretending this whole time. I almost made a run for it, but the look on his face told me that was the wrong move.
AMANDA
I’m so confused. I thought for sure he was going to rip into me as soon as we entered our bedroom, but instead, he was gentle and kind when he undressed me.
Though he didn’t say a word the whole time and seemed not to want to look at me, when he led me into the shower and turned it on before stripping down and getting in with me, I started to relax.
His hands slid the washcloth over my skin, paying attention to the places I could no longer reach and even more to that place between my thighs. After being so tense all evening, this was a welcomed relief.
He even kissed me the way he usually does, which assured me once and for all that he wasn’t mad. But for some reason, each time I opened my mouth to speak, the words just died because I just couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.
