Right now I am at the mall with Heather shopping for maternity clothes and shoes my fiancé will not bitch about me wearing in the snow. Hell he only let me come to the mall because his mom agreed to drive us. “Ooo what about this jumper?” She holds up a jumper from the maternity store and I have to admit it is gorgeous. It is fancy, but I really like it.

“This is beautiful.” I say touching the material. “I mean I am not sure about the beige. Do they have it in black or gray?” Heather glares at me before turning back and looking through the rack.

“You are not going to spend the rest of your pregnancy in dark clothes, Rip.”

“Why not? Black is fashionably agreeable.” She rolls her eyes at me and drops the jumper into the cart.

“Whatever. What about this top?” It is a V-neck chiffon top with a built-in chain going down the center of the shirt.

“Wow. That is hot.” I have a pair of maternity jeans that would go good with that.

For the next hour or so we shop and hang out. Cobi’s mom checks in from time to time making sure we don’t need anything. She came with us but immediately went in a different direction and I have no clue what she has been doing this entire time.

Before I know it, we are moving to the shoe store to find some boots and cute winter shoes. “So do you guys know what you’re having yet?” Heather asks, trying on some Ugg boots.

“No. We are playing with the idea of a gender reveal party mixed with a baby shower.”

“That sounds fun. Have you made any plans?”

“Not yet. I don’t want him to worry about it. He needs to focus on the game.”

“That’s true. But seriously they have a party planning place in here. We should go there before…” I hear a voice I didn’t expect, and I turn in the middle of our conversation.

“Oh thank God. There you are. I have been looking everywhere for you.” I stare at my mother, shocked to find her in the mall and completely taken aback by her emaciated appearance.

“Mom?” My voice sounds exasperated because I can’t find another emotion right now.

“I have been worried sick about you,” she says pulling me into a hug. I see Heather out of the corner of my eye moving next to me in protective mode.

“I have been gone for months, Mom. If you were really worried you would have issued a missing person’s report.” She steps back like I slapped her, clearly not expecting me to talk back to her, but I no longer have any misconceptions. Now that I am about to be a mom, I can’t imagine doing to my child what she did and almost allowed to happen to me. I would die for this baby inside of me.

“Well anyway, now that I have found you, you can help your mama out.” She says it like it is a forgone conclusion. One I am happy to disprove her of.

“I have nothing to help you with,” I tell her.

“Sure you do. I know you have been living with those rich bastards on the hill. I see you were smart enough to get yourself knocked up. I know they have to be taking care of you.” I knew she knew I wasn’t lost or something, but it still hurts knowing she didn’t care until she needed something.

“They don’t give me money and I would never accept it if they tried.” She sneers at me.

“Stupid girl. You are carrying a pocketbook in your belly. Did I not teach you anything?” Heather puts her hand on my arm.

“Come on Rip. You don’t need this.” She attempts to pull me away but my mom steps in my path.

“Fine. Give me that ring on your finger and I will leave you alone. It has to be worth a couple hundred thousand at least.” I doubt it cost that much but even if it did I wouldn’t care.

“I am not giving you my engagement ring. So you can smoke it up, snort it up. Just leave me alone.” Before I know what is coming she slaps me across my face, sending me stumbling back, holding my face in shock.

“Selfish bitch. I gave you life and a place to stay. You owe me.” Pissed she had the nerve to touch me, I step toward her, but Heather stops me. She moves in front of my mom, pulls her arm back, I shout her name to stop her, but it is too late. Her fist meets my mom’s face. I watch as she falls to the floor, out cold.

“Holy shit, Heather!” She holds her hand and smiles a little.

“I’m sorry. I had to do it. She fucking hit you. You’re pregnant!” she yells, lunging for my mom again. I grip her arm and pull her back.
