Dev blinked and then pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. It was a nervous habit; they hadn’t actually slipped, but Dev often did it when he was thinking.
“Okay.” Dev shrugged.
Mac finished tipping out the delicious looking stir-fry into his and Jez’s bowls. Dev looked enviously at it as the fragrant steam rose.
“Okay, we’ll leave you to it.” Jez picked up his bowl and some cutlery. “We’re gonna go and eat in the living room.”
He and Mac took their food and left.
“You don’t have to teach me to cook, you know,” Dev said as soon as they’d gone. “We already had an arrangement.”
“I don’t mind.”
Dev frowned. “We could do extra maths to make up for it, two sessions a week instead of one?”
Ewan briefly considered it. More time with Dev was appealing. But doing maths wasn’t how he wanted to spend that extra time. “No, seriously it’s fine. I cook for myself most nights anyway. You can come over and help me sometimes, and learn as you go. We can go halves on the ingredients. It’s more fun cooking for two people.”
The furrows in Dev’s brow ironed out, and a small smile tugged at his lips. “Okay, then.” He stirred the food in the pan again. “I’ve been meaning to look up some recipes to try, but I haven’t got round to it yet.”
“Well, have a look this weekend, and let me know the sort of things you’d like to learn to cook, and we can work it out.”
Dev added some cooked pasta to the mess in the pan and stirred that in too. It didn’t improve the appearance much. Once he’d dished up his weird concoction, he asked, “Can we go to the living room while I eat? They’ll be watching TV.”
“Okay.”
Sure enough, Mac and Jez were partway through an episode of Breaking Bad.
“Oh, I love this show.” Ewan sat down on the spare sofa, and Dev took a seat beside him.
“It’s fucking awesome, isn’t it?” Mac said in agreement.
Dev ate as they watched. The scent of his dinner wafted towards Ewan. It didn’t smell as bad as it looked. He glanced sideways at Dev, who was chewing, his gaze fixed on the television. Dev’s throat bobbed as he swallowed. He had a long, smooth neck and a pronounced Adam’s apple. Clean-shaven as always, there was just the lightest shadow of stubble on his chin and above his upper lip.
“Do you want to try some?” Dev asked. He raised his eyebrows, brown eyes amused behind his glasses.
Ewan had been caught staring. It wasn’t the food that had captured his attention, though. “Oh, go on, then. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued.”
“It’s really not that bad.”
Dev offered him a forkful. Ewan parted his lips. Their gazes locked, and Dev’s hand wobbled. Warm sauce dripped onto Ewan’s lip and down his chin.
“Sorry,” Dev said.
Ewan chewed. It was better than he’d expected. A bit bland, but not offensive.
“It would be better with melted cheese on top.” He caught the sauce from his chin with his finger and licked that clean.
Dev was still watching him, his eyes darker than usual. Ewan was a little more thorough with the finger-licking than was strictly necessary. He liked the way Dev’s eyes followed the movement of his tongue and lingered on his lips.
“Do you need us to leave you guys alone?”
Jez’s voice made Ewan jump with a guilty start. Both Jez and Mac were watching them, with matching knowing grins.
“What? I spilled some.” Ewan put on his best innocent expression.
“Of course you did.” Jez smirked and turned his attention back to the TV.
When Ewan looked back at Dev, Dev had flushed, but he gave Ewan a small, private smile that made Ewan’s stomach give a happy swoop.
CHAPTER NINE
That evening, Ewan would have happily skipped the statistics and gone straight to the blow jobs, but Dev took his role as maths tutor very seriously. He made Ewan work through another whole chapter—on t-tests this time—and solve several problems to prove he’d understood what he’d learned.
“Reading the theory is never enough,” Dev said when Ewan complained he’d got it and didn’t need to do more example questions. “You only consolidate your learning through putting it into practice.”
Ewan huffed and grumbled his way through three more problems before Dev was satisfied. He had to admit, Dev was right. By the time he’d finished, he really had got the hang of it, and it felt as if the new knowledge would stick.
“Okay?” he asked when Dev checked his working.
“Perfect.”
“In that case, it’s time for your lesson.” Ewan’s groin tingled with anticipation. “How do you want to do this?”
“What do you mean?”
“Do you want me to suck you first, to show you how it’s done? Or do you want to have a go, and I can tell you what I like? We could try both at the same time if we lie on the bed… but I think it would be easier for you to concentrate if we take turns rather than sixty-nineing.”
