Releasing me and shoving me behind him, he takes up a protective stance. Pointing his gun at the corner.

Where? I want to demand.

Where do I fucking run to? Each way means death.

A man walks around the corner and stops in surprise. The look on his face and the way his jaw drops, his cigarette falling from his lips, is almost comical.

Then he shouts something in Russian and lifts his gun to fire at Nathaniel.

Nathaniel shoots first and hits him in the head, dropping him.

But the warning has already gone out.

The sound of running feet hitting the gravel is the sound of our impending doom.

“Run, Eden!” Nathaniel shouts.

Spinning on my heel, I take off.

Feeling my own life slipping away from me.

Ahead of me is more gunfire.

More danger.

But I run towards it.

If I’m going to die.

If this is how it has to be…

At least I can get closer to Jude.

Maybe I’ll get to see him one last time.

Running towards my death like my life fucking depends it, a loud crack suddenly sounds out.

I duck in instinct, fearing the sky has decided to open up and rain down thunder and lightning on this fucking tragedy.

But nothing happens.

It must have been a gunshot from a larger gun…

Another crack sounds out followed by another, confirming it.

Straightening, I take off again, heading to the right. I make it around another building only to stop in my tracks.

“Die you Russian pieces of shit!” a woman screams at the top of her lungs as she fires shot after shot at whatever is in front of her.

Sensing my presence, Amanda glances over her shoulder in alarm. “What the fuck?!”

Our eyes meet, and I swear my fucking soul leaves my body for a moment.

She’s beautiful, with a sharp bone structure you only see on models, dark hair, and big eyes full of fury and emotion.

Amanda is the femme fatale I could never be.

And she could end me right now.

But whatever she sees on my face must stay her hand.

Jerking her head back to look in front of her, she yells, “Fuck off, you fucking fuckers! Fucking die!”

Knowing only more danger lies in front of her, I cut more to the right.

Skirting around to the side of the next building.

Amanda screams shrilly in absolute rage, “Burn in hell, you motherfucking pig fucking Russian pieces of shit!”

When I reach the corner, I peek my head out and glance to the left.

I can see the flash of Amanda’s gun as she fires shot after shot seemingly without pause. Dropping a group of men one by one.

There’s no one to my right, and with her keeping those guys to the left busy, I decide to take the risk to dash forward to the next building.

The gunfire only growing louder, I know I’m closer.

I sense it before I hear him.

“Fucking cunt!” Jude shouts like he’s in pain.

Fear and worry carrying me forward, I rush towards the sound of his voice without a thought to my own safety.

“I don’t hear you laughing, Jude!” a woman shouts, her voice thick with a Russian accent.

Legs pumping, lungs heaving, I race around a corner and skid to a stop. Not prepared for the sight in front of me.

Crouched low on the ground, almost on his knees, Jude cradles his hand close to his chest.

A split-second later, a woman with blonde hair, dressed in black combat fatigues, walks around the opposite corner and points a gun at his head.

Ice cold terror flooding through me, I lift my own gun and point it at her.

“Stop!” I shout.

“Eden?” Jude rasps and glances back at me in alarm.

Eyes widening, the woman glances at me, then she focuses all of her attention back on Jude. Keeping her gun aimed at his head.

“Eden?” she says, echoing Jude, then her lips quirk into a smirk. “Ah, that Eden. The one who helped make this moment happen.”

“Put your fucking gun down!” I order, ignoring the guilt that rises up inside me at that statement.

The woman slightly inclines her head, her gun not moving an inch. “If you’re here to rescue your uncle, I’m afraid to tell you Jude already killed him. Murdered him like he was a fucking dog and used his body as a meat shield.”

Her words shock the hell out of me. Jude killed Uncle Mickey? “I’m not… No! Put your gun down or I’ll fucking shoot you!”

The woman’s eyes narrow and her lips thin. “So you’re here to rescue this piece of shit?”

“Yes!” I exclaim, tightening my grip around the gun in my hands.

She looks like she wants to spit. “You’re making a mistake. He deserves to die.”

Her arms steady, her gun trained on Jude’s head, I don’t dare try to shoot her, no matter how much I want to.

Afraid I’ll miss.

Afraid even if I hit her, she’ll still shoot him and kill him.

Face darkening, eyes filling with rage, she stares at him with hatred.
