“I’m sorry, Jade, I really am. I’ll be out of your hair in a sec,” she winces. “We were supposed to be working late, but we got to come home early,” May explains to me, urging me again not to go on her account.

“I really just stopped by,” I counter. “Just on my way to check in on our virtual reality project.”

Jade looks like she’s about to faint if I go without finishing our little ‘interview.’

“I can help with that,” she cuts in, holding her defiant look and making me smile by being so confident and forward.

That’s just the kind of attitude I like in my team.

And it sounds even better coming from Jade’s mouth.

Here’s hoping she’s as feisty outside of work if you call what we do work.

My whole life’s been one long video game for as long as I can remember.

“Well, if you want to come and take a look,” I offer casually. “It would give you more of an idea of what we’re working on now. Be a chance to see if you’re a good…fit,” I remark, fighting the urge to grin at my own choice of words.

But her mom frowns. “On a Friday evening? Can’t it all just wait until Monday?” she asks, knitting her brow and twisting her mouth as she starts to look a little suspicious.

“We gamers work some pretty strange hours, but we can leave it for another time if you’re busy,” I say, knowing I’ve got Jade hooked.

Now I just need to reel her in a little. Nice and slow.

“Mom,” Jade says fiercely, almost growling with renewed intensity.

Her mom moves over to her, leaning down to tell her something so I don’t hear, but I catch every word.

“You’re grounded, remember? And for god’s sake, who ever heard of a job interview on a Friday night!” she hisses in a whisper.

But the look Jade gives her in reply says it all, and her mom takes a moment to think it over again before rolling her eyes.

“Oh…Fine!” she exclaims with forced acceptance. And turning to me again, “Jade’s just nuts about computers…the whole gaming thing. It’d mean the world to her if she could get a start in something with computers,” May reveals, suddenly sounding like she really has Jade’s best interest at heart.

But I can see at once that Jade’s interest in gaming and computers isn’t hereditary.

We gamers can also spot real-lifers or non-gaming folk. And May is definitely not a gamer.

“Great!” I smile. “I parked a few doors down looking for the place, so I’ll just bring the car up,” I tell them both, leaving May and Jade a few moments in private before we head off.

This is a little too easy, though. Just swinging by her house and now taking her to work?

Walking back to my car, I remind myself to go easy with Jade.

I still don’t know for sure if she’s even interested in me as more than just a job prospect, but I don’t know.

I’ve heard a girl’s chest never lies, and even though it is a little cool out, there was no hiding just how stiff and fucking perfect those nipples of hers have been every time I’ve laid eyes on it.

Nipples like fucking bullets….

The thought finds me groaning, and my groin starts to throb to life again; the hum of my V8 as it rumbles to life only adds an extra dimension to what I can already feel is going to be an issue.

A constant fucking hard-on every time I’m anywhere near Jade.

I decide to wait in the car, parking in the driveway, and stay put so I don’t have to try and hide my erection.

But as the minutes tick by, I wonder if she’s even coming at all.

Maybe her mom is a boss. Just when you think you’ve conquered them, they spring to life and demolish you.

But the porch light comes on, and hugging her laptop to her chest, which she’s covered with a sweater, she gets final instructions from her mom, who gives me a little smile but a sidelong glance as I wave once we pull out.

I can feel her watching the car all the way to the end of the street before we turn off.

“She’s not so bad,” I hear myself saying to Jade, realizing it’s the first thing either of us has said since she got in the car.

I turn to her expecting her to be angry at my comment, but she’s silently giggling to herself, covering her mouth with her hand.

“Yeah, Mom’s okay.” She smiles, giving me a sideways look that reminds me of her mom.

“Sorry for just turning up, and about the interview thing,” I’m quick to tell her now that we’re really alone.

“I just…I just had to come see you,” I practically blurt out.

Kissing goodbye to my theory of slow and steady when it comes to Jade.
