Sunshine: Okay.
I grin, shoving my phone into my pocket, and jog across the site to get my ass back to work.
As I make my way to Sutton's house after work, the crisp mountain air fills my lungs, tingling with the promise of something new and exciting. I've never fucking felt that way before. The anticipation of seeing her again is killing me. Never felt that shit before now, either.
I pull through the gate, frowning when I see Koda running around the yard by himself.
Where the fuck is Sutton?
I hop out, and the tiny pup comes racing toward me.
"Hey, little buddy. What are you doing out here?" I ask, kneeling to scratch his head.
"Woof," he responds, chewing on my fingers.
I chuckle and scoop him up, carrying him up to the porch with me. I knock, and then wait for my girl to answer.
As she swings open the door, a whirlwind of emotions dances in her doe eyes. She looks stunning, with her sweet smile lighting up her face. It takes all my willpower not to pull her into my arms right then and there.
Fuck me. I want to taste that smile.
"I brought this little troublemaker back," I say instead, grinning as Koda wiggles in my arms, his tail wagging furiously.
"Koda!" Her eyes widen in surprise as she notices the puppy in my eyes. "How in the world did you get out?"
"Ah, so he escaped."
"He was just in the house," she says, exasperated.
"You might want to check the windows."
She groans, plucking the wicked little dog from my arms and holding him up at face level. "You're going to get carried off by eagles and eaten one day."
"Eagles?" I grin, trying not to laugh.
"He needs to learn a healthy dose of fear." Her lips twitch with a smile, her dimples appearing like small craters.
I grin, basking in the warmth of her presence, my gaze lingering on her for a moment before I tear myself away to focus on the mischievous little hellion still squirming in her arms. Koda immediately starts licking her face, causing Sutton to laugh as she struggles to contain his excited wiggles.
Fuck. I love watching the two of them together.
The scent of fresh-baked apple pie wafts through the doorway, mingling with her delicate perfume, creating a heady mix that makes my stomach growl.
"Goddamn, you smell good," I blurt, my traitorous mouth running ahead of me. Fuck it, though. It's nothing but the truth.
Her cheeks flush a becoming shade of pink at my words, and she nervously tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "That's not me. That's dinner," she responds with a sweet smile. "I, um, cooked for you."
The admission catches me off guard, and I find myself staring at her in disbelief for a beat too long. She shifts on her feet, fiddling with the hem of her shirt.
Without a word, I carefully take Koda from her and place him on the ground before pulling her into my arms.
"What are you doing?" she whispers.
"This."
I lean in, capturing her lips in a searing kiss that ignites a firestorm in my chest. She gasps against my mouth, her hands coming up to rest on my shoulders, her soft curves molding against the hard planes of my body. The world around us fades away, leaving only the two of us standing on the porch, lost in the intensity of our connection.
Her lips are soft and pliant beneath mine, fitting like they were always meant to be there. The taste of her—sweet and addictive—sends a bolt of pure desire straight to my cock. I deepen the kiss, unable to hold back any longer, pouring all of my desire for her into it.
She responds eagerly, her fingers curling into my shirt as she kisses me back with a fervor that matches my own. The heat between us is scorching, burning away everything but the connection growing between us.
I pull back slightly, breathing hard.
She squeaks, her hazel eyes popping open. "You're not allowed to do that, Caleb."
"Yeah? Why not?"
She flounders for an answer, the desire burning in her gaze, making it clear that anything she comes up with will be bullshit. She fucking loved kissing me. It's written all over her face.
"Because I liked it," she finally whispers.
I chuckle, brushing my lips against hers in a tender kiss, meant to reassure. "Me too, baby. Me too."
She sighs softly. "You're going to be a problem for me, Caleb Maverick."
"Good because you're already a problem for me, Sutton Reynolds." I nip her bottom lip and then release her. "Let's eat, Sunshine. I still need to set up the water pumps to start draining the water from under the house."
"Okay."
As we sit down at the table, our hands touch for a brief moment, and I can't help but feel the warmth radiating from her fingertips seeping into mine. She's an enigma wrapped in a tangle of wavy hair and curves that threaten to drive me mad.
