She crossed her arms over her chest. “I was trying to help!”
“Help? You think that was helpful, do you?”
“I did help! That guy could have shot you! I was the one who stopped him!”
“My men had things under control. I had it under control. The only person there that was a wildcard was you.” His voice darkened and her heart raced.
Okay, if a person could have a ‘you’re about to get a spanking’ face, then this is what they would look like.
“Whenever there is danger, Pequeña, your one job, your only job, is to keep yourself safe. Comprendes?”
“Yes, but—”
“No!” he said sharply. His hand slashed through the air and anger flooded his face, making her jump.
Uh-oh.
“No, Preciosa. Your only job is to keep yourself safe. It’s not to worry about me or my men. Or to try to help us. When I put you behind me. You. Stay. There. If I tell you to run. You. Run. You do as you are told and you keep yourself safe. Am. I. Clear?”
She licked her lips. “Yes.”
“Yes, what?”
Um. What did he want from her?
“Yes, Sir?”
Satisfaction filled his face. Oh, good. She’d guessed right.
“He could have hit you if his shot had gone through me or if I’d moved. And that is unacceptable.”
“Is that why you went kind of blank?”
He frowned. “Blank? Ahh.” He eyed her, rubbing his chin. “Pequeña, you know who I am. What I do.”
“Well, yeah.” What did that have to do with anything? Wait. “You were Alejandro, the crime boss. That’s why you looked so cold.”
“I’m always Alejandro, the crime boss.” Reaching over, he ran his finger down her cheek. “Always.”
But he wasn’t always blank and cold. No, sometimes he was hot and fiery.
However, maybe that side of himself wasn’t something he allowed everyone to see.
“So wait . . . you were upset because you wanted me to stay behind you and I moved?”
Mind. Blown.
She wouldn’t have guessed that in a million years.
“Yes. Why else would I be upset with you?”
“I dunno. I guess because I made you go into a bad neighborhood.”
“Pequeña, no one makes me do anything I don’t want to.”
She eased back against her seat, looking down at her hands. Drat. They were still shaking.
“You’ve been through a lot lately.”
Had she ever.
“Which is why I’ll take care of your punishment for this tomorrow.”
Okay . . . cool . . . wait, what?
“My punishment? For what?”
“For disobeying me, of course. You look surprised, but you’re the one that just offered your ass to me to spank.”
“No, wait . . . I only did that because I thought you were upset with me!”
“I am upset with you. You put yourself in danger. That’s not allowed. Therefore, you’ll be punished. I’m just trying to decide how I’m going to do it. My current favorite is having you over my knee as I sit in my office chair. I think I’ll use my hand for our first time. First times are special.”
“Alejandro! Stop teasing me!”
“Pequeña, I never tease.”
She opened her mouth to reply, when the car suddenly jolted and spun. She screamed as Alejandro reached for her, pressing her to the seat and throwing himself over her.
What was he doing? What was going on?
And what was that noise? It sounded like . . . like gunfire!
Alejandro lowered the privacy screen so he could talk to The Scot and Cairn.
“Fuck! It’s a fucking ambush, Boss!” The Scot yelled, sounding uncharacteristically stressed.
“Who is it?” Alejandro asked as Cairn righted the car, speeding off. They were going too fast, and her stomach rolled as he spun the wheel, turning them sharply onto another street.
“Dunno. Do we engage?” The Scot asked.
“Su puta madre!” Alejandro spat out. “Witnesses?”
“Not in this section of town,” The Scot answered.
“I’ll take left,” Alejandro said.
What?
“The car took some damage,” Cairn said. “We can’t outrun them.”
Alejandro rose as Cairn sent them around another corner. She glanced up at him, but he pressed a hand to her shoulder.
“Get down in the footwell and stay there. That’s an order.” He drew a gun out from the small of his back, and she gulped as she nervously undid her seat belt, before crouching down. Her heart was racing so fact that she felt ill.
This was too much.
Alejandro pressed his finger under the back seat and the middle portion rose, revealing a safe. He put in a code and it opened to reveal several more guns and ammo. He threw some to The Scot as Cairn started swearing, the car going from side to side.
“They got a fucking tire!”
Alejandro pulled out his phone, doing something on it. “Back-up is coming. See if you can pull into a parking lot somewhere. Where we can defend ourselves.”
“Got it.”
Alejandro lowered the window and she whimpered. He glanced over at her, his face blank again. But this time, she understood. He was back in Boss-mode.
