He knew for a fact that had the circumstances been different he wouldn’t have minded one bit taking that hot Irish number to his bed, but not this way. Come to think of it, why did she do it? It’s not like she’s a bad looking girl, she could probably have any man in town if she wanted, so why?
Bobby couldn’t find any answers and he wasn’t in the mood to try. He pulled out his phone on the way to his truck and called Gil. He’d planned to let the detective handle things but it didn’t sit right with him somehow. So he called up his buddy and gave him fair warning.
Gil sounded about how he’d expect and Bobby had to talk him into going in for the test and stuff and cooperating with the detective. Bobby knew that the other man wasn’t thinking straight when he said he didn’t care, and that if he left things as they were the guilt would eat poor Gil alive somewhere down the line. All in all he felt pretty good about getting it off his chest and the way the detective had handled his little confession went a long way to not making him feel like a fool.
Detective Sparks got her ducks in a row by the time officer Bailey came through the door less than an hour after Bobby left. “Come on Pete, let’s hit the ground running. We have a new development to look into though I don’t think it has anything to do with this case. I’ll bring you up to speed on the way to Gil’s and then we’re headed to Wilson’s office.”
She figured the lawyer would think that he’d given her the slip with the way she’d left things yesterday and though she didn’t have much but her gut instinct and intuition, she wanted to shake him up a little by returning so soon after. “Here’s everything I found on Don Wilson since he moved to town about a year or so ago.” She passed him her tablet.
“If you go back a few years you’ll see that this person doesn’t exist, it’s all fabrication and smoke screens. But under Don Simpson, it seems he’s been walking a very thin line for years, since he graduated law school in fact. His only real run-in though was with the case that matches ours when he up and ran.”
“I plan to hit him with everything today so brush up kid.” They reached the car and she grinned at the look on his face. It was short notice but she figured they had to move fast before the man left town again. As she got behind the wheel a sudden thought hit her stopping her in her tracks. They didn’t have the manpower to put someone on him just in case he decided to flee.
As she put the key in the ignition the answer came to her and she smiled. Back in New York she wouldn’t have even entertained the thought, but here in Briar Reef it just seemed to fit. Yes indeed, it will be perfect.
CHAPTER 30
Gil wasn’t looking too good when the detectives showed up at his door. He’d not too long gotten off the phone with Bobby, who’d called to give him a heads-up that they were on their way to see him. He didn’t quite know how to feel about other people knowing what he’d done on the very night after his wife’s dead body was found. He didn’t want people in the little town, thinking that he hadn’t loved his Mel because he did.
He also had the fleeting worry that the New York detective might find his actions suspicious and start sniffing around his tail instead of going after the real killer. According to Bobby, she wasn’t the type, and from what he’d seen so far, he’d have to agree. Still, what he’d done could be misconstrued and damn sure frowned upon if it got back to the wrong people.
By the time he opened the door to Detective Sparks, and Officer Bailey Gil was in a state. He’d worked himself into a tizzy worrying not only about what he’d done but also about the fact that he and Bobby both could be barking up the wrong tree. That poor girl could’ve just been doing her neighborly duty is all, and here they were accusing her of a crime.
True he’d never been too drunk to remember wetting his dick in a woman before, but there’s always a first time for everything, and the fact that he’d been so despondent could be to blame for him not remembering taking her to his bed. But Bobby didn’t think so, and truth be told neither did he, which made him feel awful in a way he didn’t expect. So he let the two plainclothes officers in and led them to the kitchen where he’d been sitting brooding over a cup of coffee.
