“There was a car crash,” I heard myself say, “And after that, they were a little rough.”

Mike seethed, clenching his hands into fists. The doctor came back in and did a thorough examination. The police officer took pictures of every piece of flesh that had been even slightly bruised, from my wrists to my neck. She bagged up my clothes and marked them with my name and the date. The doctor held a stethoscope to my stomach and listened. He rubbed jelly on my abdomen and performed an ultrasound. The fetus was too young to see, but we could all hear the heartbeat loud and clear.

Mike bent down to kiss me in front of everyone, overwhelmed with relief. I clung to him, feeling the first prickling of tears in the back of my throat. My worst fear had not come true—I hadn’t lost the baby.

“I love you, Tammy.” Mike held me by the back of the skull, his fingers cradling my head where the kidnappers had been savage. “I want this baby. I’ll come to every doctor’s appointment with you. I don’t care where we are or what we’re doing, as long as we’re together, everything will be alright.”

“Oh, Mike,” I said, pulling him down for another kiss.

This time, I wouldn’t let him go. I dragged him so deeply into the embrace that he lost his footing and had to stabilize himself with a hand on the examination table. His mouth, usually the flavor of beer or toothpaste, had a coppery taste this time, the product of fear and exertion. We kissed as if we were the last two people on Earth, as if we weren’t being watched by two emergency professionals. We kissed as if the world depended on us satisfying our craving for each other here in this hospital room.

I came up for air when I heard clapping. Mike leaned back, and we saw, to our embarrassment, the doctor and the police officer applauding Mike’s speech. I buried my face in my hands and laughed.

We went home and tumbled into bed, holding each other close. I drifted, locked into his embrace, for only a moment before sleep overcame me. I don’t know how long he remained vigilant, but when I woke up, his arms were still around me. I peppered kisses across his jawline, now scratchy from a full day’s growth.

Trying not to wake him, I wiggled my way free and slipped off the bed. They had given me hospital scrubs to wear home, plain blue ones that did nothing for my figure. I pulled them off, folding them onto a chair. I wasn’t ever going to wear them again. Naked, I padded down the hallway and slipped into the bathroom.

I needed a shower more than ever to wash the grime of the car accident and the abduction off my body and out of my hair. I turned the shower on, testing the temperature until it was perfect. Stepping inside, I lathered myself up, scrubbing until my skin smelled fresh like soap. I worked shampoo through my hair, spending time to make sure I captured all the smoke and the air bag detritus.

My eyes closed and soap running down my face, I heard the shower door open. Panic seized me until I felt Mike’s strong hands grip my shoulders. He wiped the shampoo away from my eyes with gentle thumbs, cupping my chin in his palms. Still blind, I felt his lips touch mine. This time he didn’t taste like fear, but like toothpaste. That rascal must have been brushing his teeth just inches from the shower while I washed. I wanted to call him on it, but his tongue invaded my mouth, capturing all words.

I sank into the exchange, the water hitting my shoulders and rolling down my back, his bare chest pressed up against mine. There was almost no room in the shower; it wasn’t built for two people. That didn’t seem to bother him as he retrieved the soap from its shelf on the wall. I opened my eyes finally, appreciating the beauty of his naked form. I could just see the curve of his ass as it disappeared into the steam at the bottom of the stall.

His erection was a bridge between us, pressing against my belly. He lathered up his hands and began to rub my shoulders. He picked up one arm and lazily drew the bar up one side and down the other. The water began to run between us, casting equal spray on his chest and mine. Liquid crystal drops perched on my nipples and slid down the cut of his abdomen to his cock.

I followed the waterfall with my fingertips, slipping them around the base of his penis. It was so perfectly circular, built especially for me. Every inch of him would arouse every inch of me when thrust inside. I could feel something that wasn’t water slick between my legs, hungry for his touch.
