“Yes, boss.” Rory nods and rushes off to make the preparations.
I pick up my phone and dial Jessie’s number. The girls should be back on the ground now. It rings twice and she answers, “Jack! Are you alright? Nobody will tell me what’s happening.”
“Everything is gonna be fine, baby girl. You and Macy just relax and settle in. I promise everything will go back to normal. We’ll all be together soon.”
“What’s going to happen? How do you know that things are going to be okay?”
“That’s not for you to worry about. I’ll take care of everything. All you have to do is wait a little while.”
“I … I miss you.”
“I miss you too, love, but I’ll be with you soon. I promise.”
I end the call and go to the armory. There’s one special weapon I need for this fight. It’s the one that belonged to Macy’s father, and I’m going to use it to kill the man who killed him.
Rory comes back right on schedule. With him is an army of my best men in black vehicles wearing body armor and armed to the gills. I zip up my jacket, close my eyes, and take a deep breath of the cool night air.
This is it.
This is what we’ve been planning for. Tonight is the night we win this war, expand our territory, and secure enough power for me to become untouchable. That’s the only way to keep Jessie and Macy safe.
I climb into the passenger seat of the lead car, and we begin our journey to the compound of my enemy. His name is Declan McMann. The family he runs is an old and once-respected family.
Since his takeover, they act more like rabid animals devouring everything in their sights and not obeying the rules. Nobody, other than the psychotic killers that work for him, will miss him when he’s gone. He’s a stain, a nasty blotch on the code, and I’m about to blot him out.
We approach the compound and kill our lights, rolling slowly to a stop just outside the view of the night watchmen. A band of black-clad men run from our vehicles to take out the guards. We’ve been watching their movements for weeks and know their patterns by heart now. We wait in anticipation until we hear the signal and make our move for the gate. My men on the inside open it for us, and we fan out across the lawn until we have the house surrounded.
If our counts are right, there are eight armed men inside. Eight armed men and my prize, Declan McMann. I walk up the front steps with Rory and another man flanking me. My heart pounds in my chest, and I feel a tingling all the way from my neck to my toes. My trigger finger is getting itchy because I’ve been waiting so long for this moment.
The door is secure so we step aside and wait for the team with the battering arm to pound their way through. As they make contact with the door, the alarms ring out. I expected this. We just needed cover to get through the gate. I hear windows breaking on all sides and the sound of the back door crashing down.
“Now!” I cry and Rory tosses a flash grenade through the doorway. The explosion echoes through the stark, white hall. When the smoke rises, we make our way inside and take out three of the eight armed men in the process.
I have faith in my plan and my men so I step down the hall in search of McMann. I check his empty office and move toward the stairs. I hope he isn’t up there in his underwear. I want him dressed in full combat gear and strapped. That’s a real fight. Two men face to face, armed and ready.
My search leads me to a number of open doors to lifeless, empty rooms. It reminds me of my life before Macy and Jessie. It’s hard for me to remember what it was like to live that way or even why I was doing it.
Who was I securing all of this wealth and power for? Did I think I was going to live forever? I’m not going to live forever and neither is McMann. It’s just that I plan to live a long, long time and he’s reached his expiration date.
Like my house, Declan’s master suite is at the end of the hall. It’s the only room with a closed door, which leaves me certain he’s on the other side. That’s just like a pussy to hide in his room while his guys take all the risk. Well, tonight, the fight comes to him.
I put my ear to the door and listen for any signs of life on the other side. It takes a minute, but soon, I hear rustling. He must be getting himself outfitted in case he needs to get his hands dirty.
