“I’ve never been,” I say, needing her to know that although I don’t see an issue with what others do, that place really isn’t my thing. “I wasn’t planning on going.”
“You got a gift card,” Oracle says as if that gift requires I use it.
“It sounds like fun,” Devyn says.
“Really?” I don’t bother to try and hide the surprise in my voice.
I have no claim on this woman. What happens if she goes and finds someone there to hook up with? The idea of getting arrested for beating the shit out of someone at the club rushes through my head. I know it would happen too. There’s no scenario where I’d sit back and watch Devyn mess around with someone else despite her having every right to choose who she wants to mess around with.
“I’ve read about places like that,” she continues, her eyes on her work as if she’s speaking about something as simple as the weather. The tremble in her hands tells me that she’s nervous to speak about these things.
I point my tiny scissors at Oracle in warning when he opens his mouth to speak again.
When neither of us respond, she drops the subject, but I don’t feel relieved. I know the conversation isn’t over.
An hour later, Oracle declares that he’s done. When Devyn tells him there’s nothing else that he can help with right now, he leaves the room.
I know my luck has run out when she pulls two balls off the machine and looks up at me rather than readying another pair to be embroidered.
“Why don’t you want me to go with you to that club?”
“I wasn’t going to that club in the first place,” I explain. I might’ve gone before she showed up here, but there’s no way I’d go now. There isn’t an ounce of thrill for me when I think about it.
I can tell she wants to talk about it, but her cheeks are also flaming with color. I don’t want her to feel uncomfortable discussing anything with me, so instead of shutting the conversation down, I let her take the lead.
“Do you want to go?”
She shrugs. “I want to experience things.”
“Public sex?” I ask before I can stop myself.
If she says yes, I may have to come to terms with the fact that we aren’t compatible at all. I’ve never been turned on by the idea of people watching me have sex, and the thought of getting down and dirty with Devyn while in front of an audience makes me want to claw people’s eyes out. It makes me feel territorial and possessive in the most animalistic and feral ways.
“I don’t think so,” she says, her nose scrunching up. “What about you?”
I shake my head. “Nope. I don’t like to share, not even watching.”
Her teeth dig into her lower lip as she tries to hide a smile.
“You still want to go, don’t you?”
“I want to go to that fabric store, too,” she adds.
This woman is going to drive me insane.
“If anyone touches you, I’ll have to kill them. You know that, right?”
“I’ll make sure I stick to your side the entire time,” she promises.
“Good girl,” I say absently, but my cock threatens to come to life when she smiles even wider.
Chapter 23
Devyn
“I love your excitement,” Emmett says as he pulls out of the bank parking lot.
“This makes everything official,” I say, spreading my fingers on top of the folder on my lap.
“Can I say how proud I am of you without it sounding condescending?”
“Of course,” I answer. “I’m pretty proud of myself.”
“You should be. Few people your age have the focus and drive that you have.”
My smile falls a little. I know my age is a huge issue for him, and I feel like no matter how many times we move forward, every time he mentions it, we move back a few paces.
“I’ve always been mature for my age,” I remind him, saying the same words I’ve said every time he mentions it.
Honestly, I’m starting to grow weary of the reminders. I keep my mouth shut because I know this is something he’s trying to work through, and it’s not my place to rush that along for him.
I turn my gaze out the window. It has been a huge day for me. I finished the football order and Emmett took me to drop them off. The coach was ecstatic about them, and right there in the parking lot of the high school, offered the baseball job to me. I gladly took it of course even though embroidering on sports equipment isn’t exactly going in the direction I want to take my business. I’d be a fool to turn it down.
With the paperwork from Max creating my LLC, I was able to open a business bank account and deposit the final payment. I’ve never had that much money in all my life. As Emmett drives, I resist the urge to pull up my banking app and stare at the balance.
