“Do you mind if I ask why? I’d think this opportunity was everything you’ve been working toward.”

“And you’d be correct.” Drew managed a wry smile. “But it seems there’s this woman…”

He went on to tell his mentor about Georgia, how much she meant to him, how he saw a potential forever future with her. And because Gregory had always been like a second father to him, especially when Drew’s own dad had been so sick with cancer, he explained all the stupid, idiotic things he’d said to Georgia last night.

“Honestly, I was letting the past consume me, and I didn’t give her enough credit.” His smile widened at the thought of her dictating to him how independent she was, how disappointed she’d been that he’d tried to make decisions for her.

He wouldn’t make that mistake again.

Gregory chuckled. “She sounds perfect for you. Much like my Diana is for me. Drew, nobody ever said you had to choose between your career here and your personal life. Look around you. Many partners in the firm are married, have children, take vacations, and enjoy life. Do we work more hours than most?” He nodded. “Of course we do because that’s the nature of this business. But it sounds like you have the right woman in your corner.”

Drew winced, hoping like hell he hadn’t burned a bridge he’d never be able to repair. “About that. I haven’t made things right yet.”

“Then I suggest you do,” Gregory encouraged him with a knowing look. “Before I let the partners know your decision and work piles up on your desk. You’ll have to choose your team for this project.”

He nodded gratefully. “I will. Thank you for believing in me.”

Gregory shook his hand again. “You’ve earned it. Now go figure out the most important part of being the man in a relationship.”

“What would that be?” Drew asked curiously.

“The art of a good grovel.”

Georgia opened her door to her sister holding a bottle of wine and a carton of chocolate chip ice cream.

Courtney gave her a commiserating smile. “I’m so sorry things didn’t work out with Drew. I know it’s not even noon, but which will it be to drown your sorrows? Wine or ice cream?”

Somehow, Georgia managed a laugh, appreciating her sister’s support and humor. After calling into work this morning and taking a personal day off to mope over her break up with Drew—a girl was allowed at least one day to do so, in her opinion—she’d texted her sister with the news. Leave it to Courtney to show up with alcohol and sugar to distract her from her broken heart.

Georgia stepped back to let her sister inside. “I think I’ll take both.”

Courtney laughed as she headed for the kitchen, with Georgia following behind. “Hey, this is a judgment-free zone, except pardon me for saying so, but you look like hell.”

Honestly, Georgia felt like hell, as though she was dealing with an emotional hangover after last night’s conversation with Drew. She had zero makeup on, and her eyes were puffy from the few times she’d allowed herself a good cry. Her hair was a disheveled mess since she hadn’t brushed it after waking up, and she was still wearing her pajamas—an old pair from college with cute little corgis and hearts on the shirt and shorts. The print was faded, the fabric well worn, but the set was what she considered her comfort pajamas and was appropriate for her pity party. Her sister was lucky she’d at least brushed her teeth.

She leaned against the counter while her sister poured two glasses of the moscato, then handed one to Georgia. “I figure since this is my one day to feel sorry for myself and wallow in self-pity that I’d go all out.”

Courtney’s gaze softened. “Fair enough.”

Her sister scooped a bowl full of ice cream, handed it to Georgia with a spoon, and the two of them went back to the living room. Georgia curled up at the far end of the sofa with a blanket and began eating her treat guilt-free while Courtney settled on the other end.

Her sister let her enjoy a few bites of the ice cream before asking, “How are you doing, Georgie? Seriously.”

She shrugged. “Not great at the moment, but I’ll survive.”

She went on to tell Courtney about the conversation she and Drew had had the previous night. The things she’d said, their discussion about his rivalry with Elliott, and the other surprising thing he’d told her about his ex, Angie, which had taken Georgia completely by surprise.

“A part of me can understand why Drew is wary about making a commitment after being hurt like that, but it would have been nice if I’d known what he’d been through before, so we could have discussed our relationship, instead of him making the decision to end things because he felt it was the right thing to do. That’s the part that hurts the most.”
