But, after they were married, Nigel began to slowly grow in confidence, and he took it one day at a time. Every single week, he went to a meeting. He spoke to Gabriel’s guy who helped him. He checked in and he even took urine and blood tests every week. Even when he was told he didn’t have to. Nigel insisted on it, and Gabriel understood why. Because it was the kind of test he wanted to pass. It was something for him to keep focus on.
Now, as a happily married man, he had so many things to live for, but Gabriel would forever be there, keeping an eye on him. He was family.
Getting them all into position, he clicked the timer and rushed behind his wife. Wrapping an arm around her, he stared into the camera.
Ten Christmases.
Gabriel had gotten married. He had knocked Faith up that first year, so she was pregnant in most of the pictures, and if she wasn’t, she was always holding a baby.
“Say Merry Christmas,” he said.
They all stared at the camera and said the words he demanded. The flash took, and he left his wife’s side to go and check the picture.
“Come on, Dad?” Mark asked.
Gabriel brought the picture up and he smiled.
Everyone moved away and for several seconds he just looked at the picture. He did this so many times.
His family.
While everyone else went to the dining room, Faith walked over to him and placed a hand on his back. “Are you okay?” she asked.
“Yeah. Just making sure it was okay.”
She looked over his shoulder. “Our family,” she said.
“Yeah, our family.”
“You know, my parents would have loved you.”
He turned to look at her.
“Because I love you with all my heart, Gabriel Finch, and they would have loved you for giving me my happy ending.”
“You know I can make a dirty joke about that?”
“Shut up and kiss me.”
