“Stop!” Harlow put her hand up. “You know what, forget it. Hailey was the one to ask me to come out and talk to you, and offer you a hot beverage. She is not the problem. She is not a spy or a traitor, or anything like that.”
She turned on her heel and made her way back into the shop, even more angry than when she left it.
“That doesn’t look good,” Hailey said.
Harlow stared at her friend. She got why people were suspicious of her. At first, so was Harlow, as this job was a dream come true, but she had come to know Hailey. She had even seen pictures of Hailey growing up and had learned stuff about her life with her folks, and the fact she was sent to boarding school.
Hailey was a good person, and she wasn’t going to allow Hunter’s bullshit to affect the way she felt about her.
“It’s fine. Hunter was being Hunter. It’s nothing.” Harlow went back to the counter and she checked to see if there were more orders. “So, when are you seeing your man again?”
“Tomorrow night. He’s taking me to a hotel, and it’s going to be so magical.” Hailey pressed her hands together.
“Magical?”
“Yeah. He makes my heart sing, Harlow. I can’t even begin to describe it. When I am with him, he is … everything.”
There were literally stars in her eyes, and Harlow didn’t want to be the bearer of bad news.
“When do I get to meet him?” Harlow asked.
“I don’t know. He doesn’t want to go public with our relationship yet. He has said that he has to wait for the right time. Bad stuff is going to happen, or something. It made sense as he talked.”
Harlow didn’t like this.
What if Hailey didn’t know who Cadeon was? With how her boss was speaking, Harlow couldn’t help but feel like that’s who Lover Boy was. It couldn’t be. Harlow didn’t like this.
“What does he look like?”
Hailey smiled and her face went a bright red as she started to think about her man “He’s tall and he has large arms that when they hold me, they … surround me.”
Harlow didn’t want to think about another man who made her feel the same way. The temptation to look across the street and see if Hunter was still there was strong. She denied herself and instead focused on Hailey.
“He’s got short, black hair, but there’s enough to run your fingers through it. Nice green eyes, not too dark, but just enough to make you know that he’s got you in his sights. He does have a lot of tattoos.”
Harlow didn’t like this. She didn’t take her time to remember every little facet of Cadeon’s appearance, but he did have black hair, or maybe a dark brown. She wasn’t sure. She was choking to death when it happened, and she hadn’t exactly been paying much attention apart from trying to get out of his hold.
What if Lover Boy was Cadeon?
She had no doubt in her mind that Hailey wasn’t a traitor. But, what if she was wrong?
What if she was hoping for a lifeline like this and didn’t look at all the possibilities? Maybe the truth was just too scary to deal with.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Harlow paced the length of the main hall. Hailey had already left to go see Lover Boy. He never came to the house. Never went to her place of work. This was all getting to be a little too much.
She didn’t like this sick feeling swirling in her stomach. Harlow refused to sneak into Hailey’s bedroom, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t go to the hotel and hope to see the truth.
The main doorbell rang, and she went to it right away, not even hesitating to answer it.
Hunter was on the other side. “You called.”
Harlow grabbed her jacket. It was freezing cold outside. “Don’t be thinking this is … anything. Hailey is seeing someone, and I don’t know for sure if it’s not Cadeon.”
He tensed up. “So, I was right.”
“I don’t know if you were right or not. Hailey is not a bad person, but she is not used to male attention. She would never do anything to hurt me.” She did believe that.
“Harlow, you can’t believe that. If she’s in bed with the Twisted Bastards MC, then she’s as evil as they come.”
“I’m not going to believe you, but that doesn’t mean one of them haven’t … tried to worm their way into her life in order to get closer to the club.” She did think it was a ridiculous scenario, but one she wouldn’t put past some conniving bastards. It sounded to her exactly what the evil fuckers would do. “What did you bring? Your bike or your car?”
“I brought my bike. You said it was an emergency.”
“And this is an emergency.” She shoved him out the door, locking it behind her, and then pushing at his back to make him move along. They didn’t have time to dawdle. Her best friend could be in danger.
