“Andrew is going to lose it when he sees you,” Hailey said.
“Do you want to come out with us?”
“No, this night is for the two of you and I’m not going to be a third wheel. Trust me, I have plans.” Hailey smiled.
Harlow had been so wrapped up in her own life, that she hadn’t given any time to think about her friend.
“Are you going on a date? Are you dating someone?”
“I am seeing someone, but it’s kind of early, and well, I don’t want to say anything. It is nice and strange all at the same time,” Hailey said, and her cheeks were a bright red. She shook her head and the bell rang, letting them know someone had stepped in.
Harlow spun around and sure enough, dressed in a pair of jeans and crisp white shirt, looking mightily sexy as he did, was Andrew. His hair was brushed back, but it didn’t look greasy.
“Hi,” he said.
Her heart raced just a little bit and she forced a smile to her lips. “Hi.”
“You look amazing.”
“Thank you, ugh, so do you.”
He winked at her. “In these old jeans, you flatter me.”
Harlow couldn’t help but laugh.
“You two have a lot of fun now.”
Andrew held out his hand. Harlow hesitated, knowing that if she took his arm, she was going on this date. Pushing thoughts of Hunter to the back of her mind, she slid her hand in Andrew’s, and then followed him out of the beauty parlor.
Once they were out in the warm air, Harlow felt that panic start to return. Being around Hailey was a lot easier. She didn’t need to fill in the blanks and life went by so easily.
“I was thinking we could go to the diner, and then on to Ryan’s Place.”
“Sure, sure, it’s not called Ryan’s Place anymore.”
“I know it has been changed to Hell’s Place, but I don’t think that has the right ring to it.”
Harlow laughed. She didn’t know exactly what went down, but Ryan disappeared and rumor had it, he’d betrayed the Hell’s Bastards MC. According to town gossip, Ryan was the son of one of the members who was in prison, so the bar went back to the club, or something along those lines. She never asked any questions and the truth was, she didn’t want to know the answers.
They walked side by side, and Harlow felt that first date awkwardness, not that she had been on any dates.
“So, how was your day?” she asked, filling the silence.
“Fine, it was pretty good. Stopped a couple of leaks and enjoyed having to break up a family dispute.”
“A family dispute? How does a plumber and electrician settle one of those?” She laughed. “It actually sounds like a start of a joke.”
Andrew laughed. “Quite simple, a father-in-law and son-in-law were arguing about what the problem was and it was up to me to fix it.”
“Who was right?” Harlow asked.
“Neither of them. Both blamed the other for causing a leak, and it was actually down to the pipes being old and needing replaced. It had a happy-ever-after ending. When I left them, they had cracked open a couple of beers and talking about the football game.”
Harlow laughed. “Now that does sound like a happy ever after.”
“Yeah, and there are not too many of those around.”
Harlow didn’t say anything, and instead followed Andrew into the diner. Of course some of the Hell’s Bastards MC would have to be eating there. Andrew didn’t pay them any attention and they found a small table. He pulled out her chair and she was a little taken aback, but sat down into it.
He was being a total gentleman.
Picking up the menu, Harlow glanced over and saw the garden burger was back on. She pointed at it and looked up to see Andrew doing the exact same thing.
“Okay, this is kind of creepy,” Harlow said. “How did you become vegan?”
“Simple, I stopped eating meat.”
Harlow laughed. “But did you have a reason or … I don’t know, did you see something?”
“I helped my dad years ago bury our dog. Mom put a big roast chicken on the table and it just … clicked. I don’t know how else to describe it. One moment I looked at that delicious chicken, the next I saw it with feet, head, and alive and running around. Haven’t touched meat since. I was actually a vegan when you and I used to hang out.”
“Shut up,” Harlow said.
“Yeah, for all you know, I could have been the one to influence you.” Andrew winked at her.
“Okay, now I am wondering.” Harlow smiled.
The waitress, the same one who liked to give her number out to bikers, came over. She took their order and Harlow noticed her gaze lingered on Andrew.
Once she left, Harlow placed her arms on the table, and leaned forward. “There’s a chance she’s going to hand you your food with her number for you to call her.”
