Then why do you keep finding yourself in Chase’s arms?
Shit. Consciences were annoying.
“He just left,” Josh said, then held my chin and turned my head so I faced him. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing? This isn’t only fucking for you.”
I tried to swallow the boulder in my throat, but it wouldn’t go down. Josh was right. This would be more than fucking for me, but that wasn’t going to stop me from doing it, from having him. Having Chase once was better than not having him at all, even if it did end up breaking me. “Yeah, I’m good. It’ll be fine.”
“I question your taste in men. What is it about that guy?” Josh asked. “I kind of hate him.”
“You don’t know him like I do. He’s a good guy, J.” Chase was the kid who had been looking for love and acceptance and found it in my family. The guy who would do anything for someone who was important to him, even though the world hadn’t been kind to him. “He doesn’t want to hurt me. It’s not his fault I’m in love with him, and it’s not like he knows.” If he knew, he sure as shit wouldn’t be taking me home tonight.
Josh nodded but didn’t look convinced. “Be careful, babe,” he said, then, “You two head out.”
Josh stood and went to the bar as Nat and I went for the door. “I’ll order a car for you,” I told her, and she shook me off.
“I’m a big girl. I can do it.”
Still, I waited for it to arrive and then saw her inside safely. Chase would understand why I was late. When the vehicle pulled away, I walked around the west side of the building and to the back, where I saw Chase sitting in his truck by the side of the road.
I stumbled, caught myself, took a deep breath. We were really doing this. I was going to hook up with Chase Hawthorne, even though I knew it was the biggest mistake I would ever make.
CHAPTER TEN
Chase
There was no question in my mind that this was a mistake, but I was going to do it anyway, because fuck, I wanted him. He was gorgeous, obviously, but that wasn’t even what this was about. There was just something about Kellan, and I couldn’t get it out of my system. It had been ten fucking years, and it was still there, as if his kiss had unlocked something inside me that I hadn’t been able to close since.
“Did Becca expect to go home with you?” he asked as I drove out to my place. It was the first time either of us had spoken since Kellan got into my truck.
“Don’t know, but she gave me her phone number,” I replied, wanting to be honest. Kellan and I were just hooking up, we weren’t committed, and hell, I didn’t know if anything would happen with Becca in the future or if I wanted it to, but I also wasn’t going to lie about her to Kell.
We were quiet the rest of the way back to my place. The motion detector light came on when we pulled in. Kellan put his hand on the door, and mine went to his arm. “You sure you’re okay with this?”
“Don’t treat me like I’m a kid. It’s fucking. Why wouldn’t I be okay with it?”
When he put it like that, it made sense. I opened my mouth to say so, but Kellan spoke first. “I love that you ask, though. Typical Chase.”
I cocked a brow at him. “What does that mean?”
“Nothing. And can we use your handcuffs? That’s always been a fantasy of mine.”
Damned if my dick didn’t twitch at the thought of locking Kellan’s hands behind his back, fucking his throat…
“Ooh, someone likes that. You groaned.”
“Get your ass in the house. I hope you’re ready for a long night.” If I was only going to have him tonight, I planned on having him more than once, in every position that I could.
“Yes, Officer.” Kellan winked, and I knew right then and there that I was fucked. There was no turning back from this, and it would change things, maybe in ways I didn’t even understand yet.
We scrambled out of my truck and were both running for my front door like a couple of horny teenagers about to get laid for the first time.
My hands were shaking as I tried to unlock the door.
“Hurry!” Kellan said, pushing my arm. The keys fumbled from my grasp and to the porch.
We both bent to pick them up at the same time, and our heads smacked together. We stopped, looked at each other, and laughed.
Christ, I had fun with him. He could always make me laugh. I wondered if he knew that. He had this electric personality that made me feel…light. “You stand, I’ll bend.” He nodded, and I knelt for the keys. I could see the bulge in his tight pants, so I palmed it, rubbed him through his jeans. It was as if my hand was drawn to him. Even if I’d wanted to, I couldn’t have held back from touching him. And I definitely didn’t want to hold back. “You’re fucking dying for it, aren’t you?”
