After we hadn’t been able to keep our hands off of each other for hours and hours and we’d desperately fucked in the middle of the night. Just because both of us had needed it so badly.

My cheeks were getting hot already just thinking about it here in this kitchen I’d been in so many times. My parents’ kitchen, for fuck’s sake. I sucked in a long breath, trying to think of anything else, but it was hard when Rush had seemingly worn the best-fitting jeans I’d ever seen on a man tonight, and I kept catching the scent of his shampoo every time he walked by me.

After everyone had a fresh piña colada in their hand, it was time for me and Nathan to show Rush the house.

“The grand tour,” Nathan said. “This place has changed a lot since you were last here.”

“Last time I was here, it was a simple mountain house,” Rush said, looking all around. “And now it’s the most badass, party-ready cabin home I’ve ever seen.”

I joined as Nathan led Rush down the main hallway. “In the backyard is Dad’s pride and joy, the hot tub,” Nathan said. “And over here you can see that they’ve long since turned my old room into a home office.” We peeked in, looking at the room where he and Rush used to spend hours and hours as teenagers.

Where I’d hear them laughing from across the way, secretly wishing I could join in. Or really, just wishing I could sit in there as a fly on the wall, drooling over Rush.

“My old room is a guest bedroom now,” I explained as we went further down the hall. “But they did keep my old bed frame and some of my paintings.”

Rush stepped into my old bedroom and looked around, his eyes going wide. “Holy shit,” he said. “Shawn, you never told me you were a painter. What the hell? These are incredible.”

I glanced around at the paintings, most of which I’d done in my early twenties before we’d started up Fixer Brothers Construction. “I don’t spend much time on it anymore, but it was my favorite hobby back in the day.”

“Damn,” Rush said. “There’s a lot I don’t know about you, I guess.”

“That’s what I’ve always said,” Nathan told us. “I always thought you two would get along if you ever actually hung out.”

“You really were a great student back in high school, weren’t you?” Rush said softly, his eyes dancing as he looked closely at the textures on an oil painting I’d done of a forest. “Good grades, a steady group of friends, and an artist to boot.”

I scratched the back of my head. “You want the honest truth?”

Rush glanced back at me. “Of course.”

“Before I came out as gay, painting was the only way I could zone out and turn my brain off when I really needed to. I did have friends back in school, but not ones that I could share my biggest secret with. I guess I just really needed an outlet.”

Rush gave me a quick squeeze on the arm. “Goddamn, I wish I had known back then,” he said kindly. “You could have told me anything.”

I puffed out a laugh. “Like I said, I thought you were way too cool for me.”

I glanced over to the other side of the room, where Nathan was digging at the bottom of the closet for something. While he wasn’t looking I reached out and squeezed Rush back, at the side of his hip.

Then I dragged my palm down, brushing over the back of his jeans and giving one of his ass cheeks a quick, firm grip.

He silently made a face, dropping his jaw in mock disbelief.

“How dare you?” he said teasingly under his breath.

I shrugged one shoulder. “Sorry.”

He leaned over to talk low into my ear, and I got goosebumps just from him being so close. “I love it,” he said.

“Here!” Nathan finally said, extracting himself from his rummaging at the back of the closet and brushing dust off an old photo album. “Holy shit, look at this,” he said, walking over to us with the photo album. “That’s us on the mega surge roller coaster.”

I turned to look at the picture, nostalgia flooding me all at once. It was a summertime classic from when we were young teenagers—me in the back and Nathan and Rush at the front of a big river rush roller coaster, screaming our little heads off and about to get blasted with a wave of water.

“Mom and Dad must have about a thousand photos of us,” Nathan said, leaning over behind us. “That is fucking hilarious. Now I’m the one who does that.”

“Yeah,” I teased him. “We know. Why do you think we always say you’re in Dad Mode?”

“Shawn, you are adorable,” Rush said. “Your knuckles are white holding onto that railing.”
