“I think that’s the mate bond talking.”

“So you feel it?” I asked, not really sure how the bond impacted humans.

“Yes. My mother used to tell me things, and everything she said she felt is what I’m feeling now. I just never thought it would be this strong of a pull. I’ve never felt it before.”

“That pull between us will only get stronger,” I whispered in her ear, relishing the sound of her blood rushing in her veins. Needing her so badly that I couldn’t think straight.

Normally, when the bond set in, we would be naked, having sex up and down along every tree and corner of the house, but Shayla was human, and I wasn’t sure if that was the best route of action. From everything I knew about humans, their instincts were muted and they didn’t respond the exact same way as a shifter did. I needed her to know that she came first and always before I fucked her into oblivion.

“How about we get something to eat?” I asked, slowly shifting off her. She cast her eyes down and nodded her head slowly. “Don’t look disappointed, beautiful, all good things come to those who wait, and I promise there will be a lot of coming in your future.”

Chapter 3

Shayla

I’d just made a grown man dinner and then sat at the kitchen table, looking at him dreamily. I felt ridiculous. I’d never once in my entire life felt the need to take care of anyone other than my parents, especially not men. Yet...there I sat, loving how Brett ate the food I’d made, relished it even as he moaned and rolled his eyes with another bite.

“Why do I want to take care of you?” I asked softly.

“You’re my mate.” He said, taking a sip of his beer, and I felt the heat of his eyes on me. I felt like his prey, and maybe I wouldn’t mind being caught.

“This is all really confusing for me....you’re a Wolf. I thought you all hated the Bears.”

“I used to.”

“Did that change when you mated with me?”

“Yes,” he stated calmly, his eyes flickering to gold, letting me know his Wolf was just lurking at the surface. “Everything changed when I saw you.”

“Why do you hate us?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’ve got time,” I said, leaning back in my chair, crossing my arms in front of my chest. “Less staring at my tits and more talking please.”

“I can’t help it if you’re so sexy. That isn’t my fault,” he said with a chuckle. I liked how his voice sounded when he laughed. It was earthy and warm, nothing like the face he’d been showing me. He looked softer, kinder.

“Stop with that nonsense and tell me what I want to know,” I demanded.

Brett got up out of the chair elegantly and stalked towards me. Once he got to me, he crouched down so that we were facing each other, eye to eye. “Baby girl, with this damn hard-on it’s pretty hard for a man to think.”

I felt my body getting warmer from his words and I felt a blush rampantly crawling up my skin.

“You’re awfully cute when you blush,” he said, pushing my hair behind my ear. His fingers leaving a trail of fire in their wake.

I couldn’t think, standing that close to him. I pushed back my chair and got up, moving quickly to the other side of the room.

“I thought you said you were human?” He asked, shock forming in his eyes.

“I can’t shift, but I have Bear reflexes. I can run fast, move quickly, but I can’t shift and my sense of smell isn’t as potent. It’s just slightly better than the average human, but not by much. It’s not enough to tell me much. Now you tell me: where did you come from? Wolves travel in packs, and as far as I can tell you’re solo.”

He sighed and sat down in the vacant seat I left behind me. He put his head in his hands, and I felt a pang in my heart at his look of defeat. “I left my pack. I didn’t like the new rules so I left.”

I walked closer, so I was standing right in front of him. “What were the new rules?” I asked, raising his face so that I could look into his eyes. I needed to see the emotion in them, to truly understand him. I could sense through our bond that he feared something, but I didn’t know what. He had a deep-seated shame behind his eyes. “It doesn’t matter what it is. You’re my mate. We’re a team now. I need to know your darkness as much as your light. You’re safe, Brett, you’re home,” I said, my arms wrapping around his neck and bringing him into my embrace.

“I hated Bears and the son of my Alpha mated one.”
