“You know that day, was that only yesterday? The day you said that you two had just met and you fell for her. That was the first time I realized something was wrong. I seem to have lost time somehow. But a few days ago things started becoming clearer.
“I started switching the coffee a few days ago. I don’t know if she was drugging anything else though…” She stopped speaking and looked down at her lap. Her guilt shit was starting to piss me off. But I guess I can’t get rid of in one day what that monster had taken years to do.
“Can I ask you why you did it Elaina? If your mother and I had gotten married, your life may have changed for the better. I’m a very wealthy man.”
“Even if that were true, I couldn’t have done it. Not after everyone was so nice and…” She looked at me and turned red.
“And what baby?” I put an arm around her shoulder and grinned when she grew even redder and buttoned her lips.
“Anyway, Lisa had no intentions of keeping me around. She was just using me because she knew how you felt about family. But that didn’t matter. Once I saw her doing it, I knew I had to put a stop to it one way or another. Even if it meant facing her wrath.”
Facing her wrath! Those words sent fury running through me. I can’t remember ever being afraid of my parents, ever not knowing that they were there for me one hundred percent. It’s as if each time she opens her mouth, she steals another little piece of my heart.
It’s like Lisa came into our lives to bring her to me. It’s fucked up that she almost destroyed my parents in the process, and I guess I can see where Elaina might be coming from. As happy as I am to have found her, I would’ve preferred that shit to have happened under different circumstances.
After breakfast dad gave me that look that said okay enough, let’s get it over with. I nodded and stood to leave the room, not wanting mom and Elaina any more involved than they already were. It’ll only upset them.
Once we were alone in mom’s study, I gave dad the envelope I’d been hiding in my inside pocket. “The drug is called psilocybin, let’s just say it’s like LSD.” I waited quietly for him to read the report.
“I’ve already spoken with the D.A. He’s going to throw the book at her…”
“You don’t get involved son, this is my mess to clean up.”
“She hit my woman dad.
“I know, I understand what that means to you, but you have to admit that what she did to your mother was much worst.”
“I concede that point, that’s why you have to let me do it.”
“I can’t give it to you son. Tell me…” He looked at me now before going on.
“What were your plans?”
I didn’t pretend not to know what he was asking. “I was going to take the company and the house, leave you out in the cold like you did mom.”
“That’s my boy. Now as to the rest of it, you let me handle it. You go take care of your young lady. I can’t imagine she had an easy time of it with that woman for a mother.”
I guess that was his way of telling me the argument was over. I still feel like I should be the one to bring her ass down, but dad was right, Elaina needed a lot of care now.
She was still not sure of her footing or her place in my life or my family’s for that matter. And I knew that it would take time for that to change. I went back to the kitchen, leaving dad alone with his thoughts.
He was another one that was going to have to come to terms with this shit; everyone is for that matter. But as far as I’m concerned the only one who doesn’t bear any guilt here, is Elaina, and yet she’s the one who seems to be carrying most of it.
“Mom, I was going to leave Elaina with you today, but I think dad might need you. Just make him stay home today okay. This will all keep until tomorrow. She’s not going anywhere.”
I had one more phone call to make. It was a bit rushed, but I needed to give her something, anything to make her feel like she was wanted. I know I want her, she knows it too, but she probably thinks that it’s just physical with me. She’d learn different in time.
But there’s someone else out there that might be able to give her something she’s been missing all her life. I made the call while she was saying goodbye to my parents then seated her in the car when she came outside to join me.
