There’s no way I can walk out that door and leave her here to face whatever the hell the bitch has in store for her. Not after last night, after I’d taken her innocence.
I know dad, the kind of man he is, and the stand he’d most likely take after hearing what I’m about to say. That’s if he hadn’t changed completely. But it’s the chance I’ve decided to take.
“What I’m about to say may seem a bit sudden, but I don’t want to lie to you. Although we just met, Elaina and I are dating each other.” I gave them all enough time for that to settle in.
“But…” Bitch please!
“I know what you’re going to say Lisa, you’re marrying my dad and now I’m dating your daughter, so things can get a bit complicated.”
“Not to worry, our relationship will have no bearing whatsoever on yours. And since we’re both adults, and not related by blood, I can’t see where it’s a problem.” I took a sip of the forgotten coffee in my hand.
I’d cut off any avenue she might have had to argue and since she didn’t want to show her hand in front of dad, she had no choice but to bite her tongue and accept. I knew her devious mind was still working though, but I was already way ahead of her.
“Since you two are so busy with your wedding, I thought I’d take Elaina with me to the office for the next few days. Dad as you know, my assistant is going on leave soon to have her first child, and Elaina’s offered to help out until I find someone else. Plus it’ll give us time to get to know each other like you wanted.”
He couldn’t know that because it’s a bald faced lie. My assistant is fifty if she’s a day and has told me more than once that she’d rather jump off the nearest bridge than to have another child. She already has four. But of course I was banking on him not remembering one way or the other.
“Well isn’t that something? How about that? You two meeting and falling in love like that is just like me and…” Gotcha bitch!
“Yes dad, it’s the same as you and mom, but that was a long time ago.”
I didn’t even bother looking at Lisa when I took a sip from my cup and sat Elaina down at the table. Your move bitch, let me show dad what you really are. Do you dare?
Elaina
I didn’t know what I put into my mouth, couldn’t taste a thing. I was too afraid to even look at Lisa but I knew without a doubt that she was not pleased.
Luke had cut her off completely without giving her a chance to speak. Looks like he’s gotten to know her very well. I’d never have gotten away with the same thing.
“Have you had enough to eat baby?” He looked at his watch before getting to his feet.”
“Um. I can’t go to your office dressed like this.” I looked down at the shorts and tee I wore with flip-flops on my feet.
“Fine, you go get changed, I’ll wait here for you.” I rushed from the room after making my excuses and was sure that it was due to Luke’s interference that she didn’t follow me. I’d like to know what he did this time.
I was both excited and scared as I changed into my last summer dress. Excited to be spending the whole day with him and afraid of what Lisa was going to do to me later once he’s no longer here to take care of me.
That last thought brought me crashing back down to earth. How long is he going to be this way? This morning he’s been nothing but kind after the fact, but how long will it last?
“Shoot, the coffee.” I jumped up from the bed where I’d been sitting feeling sorry for myself and grabbed the bottle from its hiding place. My excitement had dimmed by the time I made my way back downstairs. The three of them were still sitting where I left them, but only two were talking.
LUKE
She was back to being scared again. I can’t imagine why since I’d kept her bitch of a mother away from her. “You’re ready? Let’s get going I’m already running late for my first meeting.” Not really, but I needed to get her out of there.
Lisa jumped to her feet but remembered her act at the last minute. I barely withheld my grin. While Elaina had been gone, I’d laid everything out in front of the old man to box her in.
“Lisa I hope you don’t mind that I’ve fallen for your daughter so suddenly, these things happen. I promise to be good to her, so there’s no need to worry.”
