We pulled into his driveway minutes later with my brother not far behind us because we were still staying here for the time being until our house was fixed. Which should be soon according to mom and dad. There were a lot of people around, strange faces that hadn’t been here before we left.
“Who are all these people?” He looked up from his phone and around at the people I pointed out before going back to it. “Your staff!”
“My what?” He had the phone to his ear again and instead of answering just grabbed my hand and led me towards the house once we were let out of the car.
Poor Jared just shook his head and went around back to avoid the madness. I was still processing the words, ‘your staff’ and was a little slow on the uptake. What else is he going to foist on me today?
This….There was a line of people outside his front door. One man and about six women I think. They introduced themselves but I couldn’t hear them over the ringing in my ears.
Jace was still on his phone speaking in some language I’d never heard him speak, while these seven or eight strangers were beaming at me like I was responsible for their livelihoods. What had this nut done?
“You done?” I wanted to ask him done what, but he just took my hand again and headed for the door and inside.
“Look Si, look what Jace got me.” Maggie came running out of nowhere and almost gave me a heart attack.
I eyed the new little bracelet on the wrist she held out to me suspiciously. At least it wasn’t over the top and only had one tiny diamond in the ‘I’ of her name, but I wasn’t trusting it.
“It’s pretty sweetie, how was school?” I turned her hand this way and that to find anything out of place, but he’s good. I still haven’t found anything in any of the things he’s given me yet either.
But once I overheard a certain conversation between his dad and mine, I’ve come to believe that Jace has some sort of tracking device somewhere on my person. Of course I asked and got a non-answer.
But that was weeks ago and I’d forgotten all about it. I have to remember to bring it up again later. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by any of this then, if he was willing to go to such lengths.
He smirked at me like he knew what I was doing or thinking and I was tempted, so tempted to sock him one. But I was still sore from the night before. Better not!
And then he bent down in front of her and spoke to her like they were friends, and I forgot to be mad at him. Or that I wanted to scalp him for hiring seven or eight people as my staff. What does that even mean?
I found out when we got upstairs and I walked into the closet to find all my clothes rearranged and nothing looked the same as it did when we left this morning. The poor dog was hiding under the bed and only came out when I sat on the edge to make sense of my life.
“Hey buddy what’s up? You got caught in the middle of the crazy storm too huh.” Ever since he found me in that alley he’s not been too far from my side and his crazy owner treats him better than some people in third world countries.
I saw why he was hiding when I got a look at his hair, he had been well groomed to within an inch of his life, poor thing. “I’m sorry but daddy has lost his mind, we just have to play it out until the madness passes, or he takes his meds.”
“I can hear you, hi mutt.” He dropped down next to me on the bed after rubbing the dog’s head, while two of the females were going back and forth with more folded clothes over their arms. I’m pretty sure some of those outfits I’d never seen before.
“Jace, how are we supposed to do anything with these people underfoot?” I asked out the side of my mouth. He was back to playing on his phone and I wondered what new torture he was devising for me now.
“What do you want to do?” Clueless much?
“Uh, hey, Mr. Frisky, it’s me, your usual target. You know how you are. What if you get you know…” I lifted my brow at him. “And they’re here.”
He gave it some thought before going back to his phone. “We’ll be fine. They’re very well trained trust me. Why, you want some?” Okay there’s the teenage horn dog I know and love.
“Nah, I’m not in the mood. Somebody just turned my life upside down with all this newness in one day, I need time to process. Maybe….”
