“Well, I think it’s a pretty surprise, but if it’s not right, I want you to tell me.” Picking out princess dresses hadn’t been something I had much practice with. “My feelings won’t be hurt if it’s not right. I’d rather you have something you love.”
This would be a learning experience and there was nothing wrong with trying but not getting it right.
“I’m going to love it, Daddy.” Addison was looking at me like he thought I had a few screws lose. “There are all kinds of princesses…ogre princesses, witch princesses, angry just-killed-the-prince princesses, happy getting married ones.”
That got an adorable giggle from the cutie but he didn’t mention his plans for us. “Lots and lots of princesses.”
So what that seemed to mean was that if I picked out something ugly then he could be an ogre or some kind of fantasy creature?
His mind was a wonderful place.
“You’re so smart.” And he was adorable when he got excited because that had him bouncing through the house with me.
“I’m a smart princess, Daddy.” Wiggling and beaming, he barely held himself back. “I’m going to love it.”
I hoped so.
I wasn’t sure the pinky confection I’d found would make a good ogre outfit.
What did trolls wear?
Were there pink witches?
What color dress did that good witch in the Wizard of Oz wear?
“Where are we going, Daddy?” Addison asked a very good question as I automatically headed into our grown-up bedroom.
“My hiding spot.” My answer had giggles bursting out of him. “I’m sneaky.”
Addison seemed to think it was hysterical because he kept laughing as I hopped him up on the bed and kissed his forehead. “Silly princess. Wait right there and close your eyes.”
Helping him by putting his hands over his face, I laughed as he collapsed back on the bed, barely covering his eyes. “I’m going to have to find a new hiding spot.”
Because the one I’d started with was under the bed.
Pulling out a box that looked like just a plastic storage container, I set it beside him on the bed as he kept giggling.
“I didn’t peek, Daddy.” He would’ve sounded more innocent if he’d been able to stop laughing. “You’re a good hider, Daddy.”
Bullshit.
“Thank you, sunshine.” My slightly dry response got more giggles from him. “Alright, sit up. I have your surprise.”
I opened the box as he sat up, nearly bouncing off the bed he swung up so fast. “I’m going to be so happy, Daddy.”
Laughing, I shook my head as I pulled out his new princess dress. “I hope so.”
He lied terribly, though, so I knew I’d be able to tell if he hated the peachy-pink princess dress. His gobsmacked expression gave the impression he approved as I held it up, though. The long, puffy dress had a skirt that looked like it would’ve been on a ballerina costume and it came with a matching tiara and sparkly shoes.
It was from the same company as a few of his other dresses, so I wasn’t worried about the size, but it was a bit over the top.
But, thankfully, it looked like my princess liked over the top.
Had there really been any doubt about that?
“Oh, Daddy.” Leaning forward, he sucked in a breath and just stared at it for several long moments before he let the air out. “Oh, Daddy, I’m going to be beautiful.”
When he could finally do more than gaze at the puffy outfit, he looked in the box and made a happy, slightly high-pitched squeal. “A tiara, Daddy. And new shoes.”
“A completely new outfit for a special princess.” A very surprised special princess. “Do you want to try it on?”
He nodded so hard I thought he’d end up with whiplash. “Yes, please.”
Addison seemed to be unable to look away from his new present because his eyes stayed glued to it as I set it down on the bed. “Stand up for me.”
He moved but that seemed to be mostly because I was doing most of the work. “Thank you, Daddy.”
I wasn’t sure if he was really tracking what I was saying but that didn’t seem to matter. His body shifted where I put it and that was what mattered.
“Hands up.” Putting his apron on the bed, I started taking off his dress as he made another happy sigh. “You’re going to look so pretty.”
“I am.” His adorable response made me smile but I managed not to laugh. I loved how confident he was about his princess side. It was one of the things I admired most about him and I hoped it never changed.
Even if my sparkly princess had a frowning roommate.
One who wasn’t nearly as vanilla as he’d tried to come across as.
I couldn’t decide if he was doing it deliberately or if that was just who he was, but it was getting easier and easier to see why the college had put the two of them together. They had a lot more in common than I would’ve imaged and I had a feeling that’d just scratched the surface…because from what I’d read, in most cases, only students who were both LGBT in some way got roomed together.
