I dart out of there as fast as my legs will carry me.

“Myla.”

Colt yelling my name reaches me just as I get to the back gate.

I don’t stop.

“Fuckin’ stop.”

Oh. He wants to get angry at me?

Seriously?

Spinning, I charge angrily towards him. It’s nearly dark, but I can see him well enough to watch as he stops and takes one step back just before my body collides with his. I hit him with an angry force and we both topple backwards. Losing his footing, we tumble to the ground, with me landing on top of him. He grunts when his back hits the dirt and I know he’s winded because his face looks pained.

Good.

I don’t move.

“Get off me,” he gasps between winces of pain.

“No,” I grind out.

“What the fuck are you so angry about?”

The worst part is, I can’t answer that question. Not really. We’re not in a relationship, I’ve never told him I want to be in a relationship, and so technically he is free to do whatever he wants. I’m simply hurt because I let myself develop feelings for him and he doesn’t return those feelings. That’s on me.

So, I shove off him and get to my feet, turning again.

“Keep runnin’,” he mutters, pushing to his feet, “seems to be all you girls know.”

Pausing, I grind out. “What did you say to me?”

“I didn’t stutter.”

I spin back towards him. “I’m not Chloe. I don’t quit. I don’t fucking leave because things are hard. If that were the case, I would have been long gone before I allowed myself to get...”

“Get what?” he challenges, stepping up closer to me.

“Forget it,” I mumble.

“You’re so strong and forward, say it. You have no problem saying anything else that bothers you.”

Fine.

He wants to hear it. So be it.

“I allowed myself to get feelings for you. A man who has done nothing but show me I’m worthless to him. I get it, you’re all damaged and hurt and your heart belongs to someone else. It’s on me, I know it is, but you don’t need to rub it in by sleeping around like the manwhore you are.”

There. I said it.

“You have feelings for me?”

Oh, that’s what he wants to focus on? Of course, it is.

“It doesn’t matter. I’m done here. You’ve made it very clear that you do not feel the same. I don’t know why I ever thought you would. I’m just her niece, the woman she left her mess to.”

He doesn’t say anything and now I feel like an utter fool.

I need to go.

I turn again and walk towards the gate.

“I can’t feel for you, Myla.”

His voice is rugged and low, but it has me stopping, shivers running up my spine.

“Why?” I call, not facing him, my fingers on the latch of the gate.

“Because you fuckin’ scare me.”

His words come out ragged and passionate, the word hitting me hard. He expresses it like the very thought of being with me is truly chilling and something he can’t comprehend.

I never in my life thought I’d scare him.

I glance over my shoulder at him unable to stop myself asking the question dancing on my tongue. “And how, dare I ask, do I scare you?”

He takes a step towards me. “Never once have you so much as blinked at the life I live here.”

Another step.

“You helped me drag a dead body and you didn’t ask questions.”

Another step.

“Better yet. You didn’t freak out.”

Another step.

Now he’s in front of me.

“You want me to fuck you hard and raw, you want my pain, and you want it so bad it makes me hard just thinkin’ about it.”

I hold my breath, our eyes locked.

“You scare me because you’re exactly the kind of woman I’m lookin’ for.”

I suck in a breath.

I am?

Me?

Picturing him with those two women has my eyes flaring. “Then why would you go sleeping with other people instead of saying that to me?”

My hands are shaking, so I place them down by my sides.

“Because I’m tryin’ to go back to feelin’ nothing. My life was easier then. Now, I’m openin’ myself to bein’ hurt again and I don’t know if I can fuckin’ handle it.”

I get that, I really do, but he’s assuming I’m the same kind of person as the one who broke his heart and although I adored her, I am simply not the same.

“Remember when you told me I’m not like Chloe?”

His eyes flash and he gives a sharp nod.

“That’s because I’m not,” I say, my voice lowering.

“Fuck,” he murmurs, his hand going up to trail down over my bottom lip. “I can’t want this with you.”

I slide my tongue out, running it over his finger. His low growl has my pussy clenching, and it takes everything for me not to suck that finger deep into my mouth.

“Because it’s wrong?” I whisper.

“Fuck what’s right or wrong. No, it’s because you’re stubborn and you’re fiery and you’ll challenge me for the rest of my fuckin’ life.”
