When she drew back, she stared up into my eyes. “I love you. God, how much I love you. I’ve cried and cried thinking I’d lost you forever. Even now, I can hardly believe you’re here.” She cupped my face and looked at me with such love, it made me feel undeserving of that love.
“I’m so sorry. I was an ass. I promise to spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”
“It’s okay. I forgive you. All you need to do is love me.”
“That I can definitely do,” I said, covering her mouth with mine. Our tongues touched, familiar and exciting at the same time.
Lillian pressed her body to mine, showing me without words that she wanted me as much as I wanted her. Wanting a taste of every part of her, I moved from her mouth and nuzzled my way to her earlobe, biting it gently.
“Don’t you think it’s time we got on with making these ten babies?”
“Five,” she corrected with a laugh.
“If we start tonight. That will be one down and four to go.”
“Oh no. My mother!” Lillian cried with a groan.
“What about your mother?”
“I haven’t told her about us. She still thinks you’re my boss.”
“So tell her,” I said.
“Okay, but you have to wait out here for a few minutes while I tell her.”
“I’ll wait forever,” I said.
She laughed. “I doubt that very much.”
I sat down on the stone steps. She had no idea. No idea at all. I was here forever.
Chapter 58
Lillian
Iwanted to cry and celebrate at the same time. I shut the door and felt as if I was walking on air. What if this was a dream? I pinched myself.
Ouch.
That had really happened.
Max loved me. I hadn’t just been someone who just relieved an itch. I had meant something to him. Giddy joy filled me.
“I almost came looking for you.” my mother said, concern on her face. “Is everything okay?”
I slid onto a stool and grinned at her. “Very okay. Mom. Um… there’s something I need to tell you so please don’t freak out.”
“What is it?” she asked in a calm voice that took me by surprise. I expected her to panic the way she always did since Henry.
Remembering that Max was waiting outside, I ploughed on. “I guess I should have told you this a long time ago, but Max is not just my boss. We’re kind of in a relationship.”
“I figured that out,” my mom said calmly, surprising me further.
“You knew?”
“Of course, I knew. That look on your face when you mentioned his name. I knew you were in love with him. I know my girls.”
I laughed. “You’re amazing, Mom. Anyway, he came by to tell me that he loves me and he wants us to be in a serious relationship.”
She stood and hugged me. “I’m so happy for you. I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to go find him and give him a good shake.”
I laughed. “You don’t even know what he looks like.”
“You wouldn’t understand. It’s a Mom thing. You want to protect your children; however old they are.”
“Thanks, Mom. I should have told you. I thought you’d be disappointed. You had such high standards when it came to your work.”
A cheeky look came into her eyes. “How do you think I met your father? We worked in the same office in those early years. You could say he was my boss, though not directly,” she said and burst into laughter at my expression.
I laughed. “You had an affair with your boss?”
Hands akimbo, she said, “He married me.”
“Dad loved you so much,” I said, remembering how my father had looked at my mother.
“So, are you going to invite Max in, or are you going to leave the poor man outside for the rest of the night?”
“I’m going to invite him in,” I said and happily went out, almost unable to believe it was possible to feel as happy as I did. I flung the door open. Max looked up, and my heart expanded with love.
“Come, meet my Mom.”
He got up and followed in.
Mom and Max took to each other immediately, and you’d not have believed that they had met less than an hour before. She regaled him with embarrassing stories about Rose and me growing up and Max encouraged her to reveal more.
He ended up staying for dinner.
We left at eight after dinner and a few glasses of wine. As fun as it had been, I couldn’t wait to be alone with Max.
“Let’s go to your apartment,” Max said. “It’s nearer and I’m not sure how long I can wait to see you naked. It feels like a lifetime ago that I opened your legs and ate you out.”
I shivered at the intensity in his eyes and rested my hand on his thigh. That was what I had longed for, amongst other things. Knowing I could touch him whenever I wanted because I had a claim on him.
