I didn’t buy her bullshit for a second. “Weasel,” I whispered.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.”
“You said something.”
“I was wondering if you were trying to wriggle out of our bet.”
“Of course not. I was only thinking of you.”
“That’s very kind of you, Maggie, but I’m happy to report that I’m fine.”
“Well, in that case, the bet stands.”
“Good,” I cooed. “I’ve seen a lovely pair of shoes I want to buy with my winnings.”
Maggie laughed suddenly. "You can’t fool me, you know. I can hear the frustration in your voice. It won’t be long before you're ready to quit; just be ready with my hundred dollars because I’ve seen a pair I like too."
"That is so not going to happen," I said.
"Come on, tell me the truth," Maggie's voice softened. “What’s the beast really like?”
Honestly? He's a jerk of the highest order. I want to sock him in the jaw, but I also want to ride him hard from dusk to dawn. But of course, I didn't say that.
“He’s a workaholic and a perfectionist who expects the same of everyone around him.”
“But does he make you wet?”
“Are you asking this as the owner or the agency?” I asked innocently
Maggie sighed. "All I'm saying is, don't drive yourself to madness just to win a bet."
I chuckled. "It’s very sweet of you to worry about me so much, but like I said, I’ll be fine." At that moment, from the corner of my eye, I caught Mr. Frost striding into my office space.
“Thank you for the call, Miss Childs. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on my progress,” I said crisply and ended the call.
Mr. Frost stopped in front of my desk. His face was chiseled granite. Obviously, a night at the Mimosa suite with his booty call had done nothing to improve his mood.
“You were giggling,” he accused darkly. “Was that a personal call?”
“No, it was Mrs. Childs from the recruitment agency wanting a report of how I was faring.”
His eyes glittered. “And did you tell her how well you are… faring?”
Yup, he had watched me on his bed. I faced him dead on, my face expressing not an ounce of embarrassment or guilt. “The dogs were a bit of a low point, but I guess it really will be up to you to rate my… performance.”
A flash of emotion swept through those wintry eyes, but it blew by so fast I couldn’t tell what it had been.
He frowned. “I’m leaving in half an hour and I’ll be gone all day, but I’ve sent you work. Get me a coffee.”
“Yes, Sir,” I said, watching his broad back. I knew I could handle his lack of social skills and his foul moods, the only thing I couldn't get a grip of was my weird, crazy physical attraction for him.
A funny thing happened later that morning. An attractive woman with injected lips and dressed in expensive clothes came through the lift. She had a phone to one ear, and in her hand, she carried a white box tied with a classy black ribbon. She seemed surprised and even amused to see me sitting at my desk.
“Good morning. Can I help you?” I asked civilly.
She held the phone away from her ear and her voice dripped with sarcasm. “I highly doubt it. You won’t be here long enough.”
Keeping my face politely expressionless, I stood. “That may be true, but for the moment I’m here to help.”
She looked me up and down in the same proud way Mrs. Frost had at the restaurant, then dismissed me as unworthy.
“Thanks, but no thanks. I’m just going to pop into Max’s office and leave this box of cookies for him,” she said intending to sail past me.
“I’m sure he would appreciate knowing who brought the cookies,” I insisted.
She looked at me as if she was speaking to an idiot. “There’s a card.”
I sighed and made a gesture with my hand. It was simply not worth it. She was obviously a lover, and truth be told, they were perfect for each other. “Fine. Go ahead.”
A couple of minutes later she came out, still talking to whoever it was on the phone with her. She didn’t bother to speak to or even look at me. When the lift doors shut, I went into Max’s office and looked at the card.
With love, Elizabeth
Chapter 11
Max
As much as I tried, I couldn’t get Lillian out of my mind for any length of time. I’d never been attracted to an employee before and I was treading on dangerous grounds, but I couldn't stop thinking about her. The unpalatable fact was I didn’t even want to stop.
There was something about her that fascinated me.
No, I wasn't worried it would last. I knew that as soon as I slept with her the obsession would end. So far, no woman had remained interesting beyond the bed. I didn't kid myself that Lillian would hold my attention for longer than a few weeks, but it would be a few very interesting weeks.
