“Don’t mention it. Getting to steal from the Order is kinda a bucket-list thing.”

I smile and pick up my coffee. We make it almost to the door before I come to a standstill.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” I huff.

“What?” Easton asks and follows my gaze.

Scott.

Chapter

Twelve

Scott comes to a sudden halt and the guy behind him runs right into him.

“What the hell, man?” he asks, looking up from his phone. I recognize the guy from the night I put the truth potion in everyone’s Champagne, but I don’t know his name. His eyes go from Scott to me. “Isn’t that your sister?” He tips his head and looks me up and down.

“What are you doing here?” Scott hisses, eyes darting around.

“Getting coffee,” I say slowly and hold up my cup. “It is a coffee house.” Easton steps up next to me and Scott nervously looks at him. Then he notices that Easton is also holding coffee and looks rather alive.

“Did you upgrade from your undead lover?” Scott sneers, looking rather proud of himself for coming up with a totally unoriginal insult. Just call me a half-breed while at it.

“Watch your mouth,” I retort.

“What are you going to do, bite me?” Scott presses his lips together and raises his brows, thinking he’s getting a rise out of me.

“I would, but I hate the taste of shit.”

Scott’s friend sniffles a laugh, earning a glare from Scott. “Get out of my way, Callie.”

“She’s not in your way,” Easton says, voice level. “Unless you’re headed to the back before ordering. Counter’s that way.” He motions toward it and then looks at me. “Let’s go.”

“Yeah. Got a busy night of breaking and entering ahead of us.” I smile sweetly and step forward, Binx winding around my legs as I walk. We only make it a few strides before Scott grabs Easton’s arm.

“If you have any sense at all, you’ll stay far away from that one. You’ll be sorry when you find out what a freak she really is.”

“I know exactly who Callie is.” Easton easily pulls his arm free and gives Scott a little shove back. “And don’t put your fucking hands on me ever again, if you have any sense.”

“Just leave me alone, Scott,” I say with a sigh. “Stop being so obsessed with me and everyone in my life, okay? It’s time for you to move on.”

A few girls at a table nearby are watching and one snickers, probably thinking Scott is a jilted ex or something.

“This isn’t over,” Scott growls. He doesn’t like to be cast in a bad light. Reputation is everything for him, and I’m sure he’s still recovering from whatever was said after I dosed his whole party with truth potion.

“But it is. I have things to do.” I take another step.

“You’re not so big and bad when you don’t have your vampire to protect you,” Scott quips.

“Protect me?” I arch my eyebrows and laugh. “From you? Please. You know the things I can do without even lifting a finger.” I let my eyes flash blue for just a half second. Scott’s friend stiffens, looking at him and then back at me, unable to be sure he saw what he saw. Easton puts his hand on my shoulder, and we walk toward the door.

“I know you want to,” I say to Binx and wave my hand over him, removing the cloaking spell. He shadows up around me, looming like a dark cloud. He waits until Scott is looking, and then shows his true face, red eyes glowing like coals in the night.

Scott lets out a startled yelp and I laugh. Binx shifts back into cat-form and meows, padding along next to us.

“There are millions of people in Chicago,” I start. “Why do I constantly run into the one person I don’t want to see?”

“Because you don’t want to see him. It’s how the universe works, isn’t it?”

“Hah, it really seems like it.”

“I’m parked nearby,” Easton says, and I nod, trying to ignore the nagging feeling that Scott is going to prove to be the constant thorn in my side—one that I don’t have time for. “You okay?”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m…I’m fine.”

“Really?”

The fake smile comes to my face automatically. “It’s…it’s a lot. From Scott to Eamon to fucking Osiris and Paimon. It’s…a lot.”

“It is.” We walk a few paces down the block. “Who or what is Eamon?”

“A vampire, and that’s a story for another day. Maybe I’ll open a Google Doc so I can share my oh-shit list with everyone. Ya know, so you can stay up to date.”

Kristy texts me when we’re on our way to the warehouse, wanting to know if I’m okay. She’s been texting me every now and then since we left the Covenstead. I appreciate her checking in while also giving me space.

“What do you need to astral project?” Easton asks.
