“We can do as much talking as you’d like in a more comfortable spot.” He held out his open palm.

With a long, loud sigh followed by a grumble, she slapped her car keys in his palm.

He didn’t care how much it hurt his injured lip, he couldn’t resist whistling a fucking tune as he jogged down the stairs and out to her ride.

He’d have no problem listening to her laundry list of boundaries, but that didn’t mean he’d agree with all of them.

Or even any of them.

Why she couldn’t simply walk away from Rez, she didn’t know.

Well, she knew, but didn’t want to do a deep dive on the reasons. She’d be scared of what she found since she’d no longer be able to gloss over her feelings and instead, they’d smack her right in the face.

Their whole discussion over boundaries went just as she expected. She talked, he listened and then he tweaked them to suit his needs.

Of course, since he was a cop, his damn negotiations skills were on point.

She was both annoyed and amazed at what a pro he was in turning her demands into what he wanted instead. During their long conversation, he somehow even talked her into attending Sadie’s funeral with him, whenever it would be.

They didn’t have sex that night. It was the first time she’d stayed over that they didn’t. Instead, he had set her up in his bed, put her foot on a stack of pillows and he even held a bag of frozen beans to her ankle as they talked.

He had actually taken care of her and made sure she didn’t have to get up by bringing her whatever she needed.

His efforts might have been the reason she gave in too easily.

Or it could be the fact she was falling for him.

Or the possibility she already had.

She wouldn’t budge on one of her hard limits, though. That being quitting her job.

In exchange for him backing off on that point, she promised she would put some effort in searching elsewhere. The effort might be futile, but she’d at least try.

Since that night a week ago, he’d done what he agreed to and stopped hounding her about leaving The Peach Pit, even though he hated the fact he was banned from her place of employment.

He made his concern known—and in no uncertain terms—that no one would have her back if something else went down. Especially the Demons, since they couldn’t care less what happened to her. In fact, Rez considered them more dangerous than drunk customers.

She promised to be more cautious and observant.

Also since that conversation, he talked her into staying at his place every night for the rest of the week. She was to come over no matter how late she was finished at work.

That led to another boundary she didn’t want him to cross… His demands that she find a new place to live.

Her apartment might not be perfect, but it was affordable. And if she did end up finding another job, it most likely wouldn’t pay enough to upgrade to a better complex, anyway. Him harping on her about it wasn’t going to change that fact.

While she didn’t come out and tell him that she looked forward to seeing him every night after work, the truth was, she did.

Every time she walked through his front door, she immediately felt as if she belonged there. At his place. With him.

Walking through his door was beginning to feel like coming home. More than her own apartment.

Their relationship was getting comfortable. It reminded her of the coziness of shrugging on a soft, thick sweatshirt on a chilly fall day.

What was between them now was so much more than only sex. She couldn’t deny they had a connection. One that only got stronger by the day.

She could either go with it. Or she could end it. If she was going to end it, she would’ve done it that night a week ago.

The night he’d been kicked out of the club for coming to her defense, she had seriously considered it and came to the conclusion that was the last thing she wanted. Even considering it had caused an unbearable ache in her heart.

So… here they were.

In a place she never thought she’d be in with Rez…

In a serious relationship they both pretended wasn’t.

And because they were, he’d been opening up more about the task force, what his team was doing and what had happened with T-Bone, so she was aware of how dangerous the Demons, and that prospect, were.

Of course, she knew some of it, but the rest was enlightening. She was damn sure he didn’t tell her everything. She wondered if he also told her some details in an attempt to scare her enough so she’d find another job even quicker. She wouldn’t put it past him since he now wanted her to check in with him several times during her shift.
