Crew shook his head, pretending he hadn’t heard the quote from the old Popeye cartoons. “Continue,” he prodded Rez.

“What I said had me thinking…”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake!” Fletch yelled through the phone.

Rez ignored his impatience. “I figured when I go in tomorrow night, I might mention I’m looking for construction work and if they have any, let them know I’m available.”

“Damn. I take back the part about you not being bright upstairs. Something might be flickering up there in that normally empty noggin of yours,” Decker said.

“Doesn’t mean he’ll bite,” Crew murmured, but Rez could see the man’s wheels turning. “It also can’t hurt to drop a hint.”

“Can you imagine if they hired Rez to finish their construction?” Decker asked.

“And he brought along his own crew to do so?” came from Luke Rodgers, another DEA special agent like Crew.

“Yeah,” Crew said, scratching the back of his neck. “That could fucking work. Damn, Rez, I have to give you credit.”

“We don’t know if it’ll work yet,” Rez admitted.

“If anyone can make it work, you can.” It sounded like Finn was on board with the idea.

“He’s got that damn golden tongue,” came from Mullins at the other end of the table.

“Damn right I do.” Rez stuck out his tongue and wiggled it. “Better hide your women!”

When Wilder’s groan came from the speaker phone, everyone laughed.

Except for Rodgers, who frowned. “But, fuck, do you know anything about construction?”

“I’ve done some handyman type of shit. Especially at my mother’s place. She’s always calling me to fix something. Plus, we did a shitload of work here to get this building to where it is now. Learned a lot then.”

Most of the task force had never stepped inside The Plant until after the team was formed. By then, everything except for the second-floor apartment where Nox lived had been completely overhauled. Other than pictures, they had no idea just how much blood, sweat and tears the BAMC members put into it.

“The bedrooms at the Demons’ clubhouse are all that’s left to finish, and they’re framed out already,” Nox murmured. “Wouldn’t take much to complete them.”

“Is the electric already run?” Rez asked him. He was not fucking with electricity.

“I saw electric installed when I was back there the last time,” Decker answered. “And luckily no plumbing is needed in any of the rooms since they have a community bathroom.”

Nox picked up from there. “From what I could see on the camera feed, they’d need the recessed lights installed and wired yet, drywall and paint. Nothing too complex.”

“Shit you’ve done plenty of,” Crew mentioned to Nox.

“Yeah, shit I can handle,” Nox confirmed. “It’s something we could tackle together.”

Well, damn, if Nox was willing to leave his cocoon at The Plant to work with him at the Uniontown church, then that might be even better.

Crew’s face didn’t hide the fact that he was pleased with Nox volunteering for that job. But then, all of their BAMC brothers were concerned that Nox hardly left the building unless he had to. “Maybe mention to Saint that you’re willing to work for meth instead of money. That might get Wolf to jump on that deal.”

“That would put two of us there in the clubhouse, which is good, but I’m not sure we’d get to witness much,” Rez warned. “I can’t imagine the Demons will give us free run of the place.”

Crew shrugged. “We got cameras for that. But you can keep your ears and eyes open. Every inch isn’t covered by the cameras and the few audio feeds we have suck. It’s hard to pick up shit when they’re blasting AC/DC’s Highway to Hell or a group of them is being loud and rowdy.”

Next to Rez, Decker murmured, “Man, this might work.”

“Only if they agree,” Rez told him.

Nox said, “Maybe the Demons wanted to pay the last construction crew with meth and that’s why they bolted.”

“Or they got tired of dealing with those dickheads,” Decker added.

“That, too,” Nox agreed.

“All right, that settles that. I’ll get you some petty cash for your buy tomorrow night. Play up the fact you don’t have a lot of money to buy more but you’re willing to trade for it.”

“I can do that,” Rez told Crew. “If we can get our foot in the door, we might also be able to get friendly with some of the members, too, while we’re there. Maybe at the end of the day after we’re done working hard, we bum a beer, then shoot some pool and, even better, shoot the shit.”

Crew combed his fingers through his salt-and-pepper hair. “Yeah, they’re going to have to trust you somewhat for you to hear or see anything we’d be able to use against them or that will even give us any leads.”

“Could be a good way to keep an eye out for T-Bone and Sadie, too,” Decker mentioned.
